The restaurant is very attractively designed and our table was very comfortable. The food was tasty but over priced, as the presentation on the plates was poor-average. The service wasn't good, the staff seemed stressed and small requests came across as hassle. The first round of drinks we ordered took a long time to come, and were finally chased up at the bar by whom I assume was a manager. To start we ordered some nibbles to have with our drinks before the main course, however a waitress tried to remove these from the table when we were clearly not finished, and the first drinks hadn't yet arrived! The restaurant was not busy, but towards the end of our meal a member of kitchen staff came out of the kitchen obviously to see how many more meals would be ordered, this seemed unprofessional and we felt a little rushed. We assume that the slowness of service was due to a wedding taking place, however we do not feel that this should have impacted on our visit to the restaurant. My mother and I had spent the morning in the spa, and had come down to meet the rest of the family for my birthday lunch, so it was disappointing not to feel particularly valued or 'special' on this occasion.

    One word ... WOW
We had an amazing experience here to celebrate a late anniversary/Christmas present. The staff went above and beyond to look after us. From a perfectly placed setting for our meal to the personalised treat at the end.
We were given full details of the specials on offer as well as nice wines to compliment.
From ensuring we were enjoying our courses to clearing finished plates efficiently, the staff were exceptional.
I enjoyed the Ham Hock for starters and my husband ordered the 'small' Cesear salad that would feed a small family. The portion sizes were amazing for starters!
For mains we had the Shepherd's Pie and off the specials menu, the Lamb loin. We couldn't fault any of our courses, they were beautiful. Unfortunately we couldn't fit in desserts as tempting as they were.
The restaurant it self is beautifully presented, easily accommodating small and large parties with various table sizes, my favourite feature was the fire pit in the middle. I could have happily sat there all evening.
Can't wait to return! Two very happy customers

We really enjoyed the setting of the Brasserie; and our meals were all delicious. It was a shame about the other guests, a group of girls, with their mothers, made the place feel like a school canteen; and another table was protesting - just to get a free bottle of wine, we think - about their mussels tasting of fish (or something). The staff were excellent though.

Attended Smith's Brasserie on 14th February, being Valentines night and my father's 70th birthday. First time we have visited Bovey Castle and we were very impressed. I telephoned beforehand to ask if chef would be kind enough to present a plate to my father with Happy 70th Birthday written on it and it was presented to my father not only with greeting on but truffles as well! Staff hospitable and very professional. The four of us had different dishes from the menu which were cooked to perfection. Your staff kindly showed us around the Great Western Restaurant after our meal and we are looking forward to visiting again in the very near future. Although we live close by, I am sure we will treat ourselves to an overnight stay with spa use. I cannot praise Bovey Castle enough and I shall be recommending you to all my friends and family. THANK YOU BOVEY CASTLE!

A pleasant restaurant with ok food. Unfortunately the price of the food far exceeds the quality offered. A disappointing experience overall.

Very poor meal. Beef tough, few vegetables

While the service was attentive, my son and I unfortunately ordered the steak which was absolutely terrible. In addition to being tasteless, it was the toughest piece of meat I have ever been served. I was surprised that such an establishment which obviously prides itself on quality would serve such poor quality food. It's a shame as it lessened the experience of the evening. In addition to telling the waiter of our disappointment I also told the front desk and am now telling you.
