We had a meal in Smith's Brasserie to celebrate my wife's birthday. It was our first visit to Bovey Castle.
The meal experience was very pleasant. The food was good and the staff were very friendly and attentive. In fact when they discovered it was her birthday they brought my wife a plate piped with a chocolate Happy Birthday together with some "petit fours". Delicious. The only slight downside was that being a very hot and sunny day it would have been nice to spend more time on the terrace outside the brasserie. However there was only one umbrella which was already taken so we were only able to sit out for a few minutes before having to go inside to escape the sun.

    Dear Management,
To be honest, we were disappointed. We thought, the Smith Brasserie is more casual then the main restaurant, but still on a high level. But it isn't at all because of the followiing experiences:
We comanded a bottle of the Malbec for 40 £, which was served too warm, with at least 23 °C. We asked for cooling, what also happened.
We started with a Devon salad with Blue cheese, Large size: The size wasn't really large, the quantity of Blue cheese was in my eyes below expectations. But the worst was, that no sauce was added. I asked for oil and vinaigre. It took at least about 5 minutes, until the waitress informed, that they have no oil and vinaigre some other sauce. So, she went again in the kitchen and turned some minutes later back with a mustard sauce, like you can buy it in every supermarket.
We continued with the fish of the day, served with young potatoes. The potatoes were much too long cooked in water and softy like a jam.
The lamb shoulder also menu of the day, was ok, but a bit too cold.
The evening ended up with a bill of about 170£, together with two drinks in the nice Oak Bar. We had a wonderful evening with my girlfriend, but because of her, not because of the Smith Brasserie.
The rest, means the atmosphere in the castle, the nice room we had, was lovely. If I had to make a comment in Tripadvisor in a few words, it would be "avoid Smith Brasserie, if you want good dining"

Lovely meal and excellent service. Best so far. Only minor gripe was that we were seated in an empty restaurant next to 4 very loud golfers talking about their exploits in the drinking area. The waitress very kindly moved us on request. We are going again on Thursday.

A very pleasant evening was enjoyed by us both. The surroundings were spacious and comfortable. The food was delicious.

Nice place to visit but the food is nothing special and even more so for the price. Take for example the Pig at Honiton, slightly cheaper but infinitely more interesting food menu. Paid over £100 for a two course dinner for two people which I feel was worth £60.

We were very impressed with the food we ordered, as well as the ambience and service.
