Taking its name from an archaeological find in the fields it overlooks, The Saxon King in Southend-On-Sea is a pub and restaurant specialising in rotisserie chicken and pub classics. It boasts a large beer garden and indoor and outdoor play areas for the kids.

The Saxon King menu features a range of rotisserie chickens with a choice of sides and sauces, as well as delicious gourmet burgers, including wild boar and chorizo with Monterey Jack cheese and barbecue sauce. Guests can even build their own burgers with their choice of meat, cheese, sauce and toppings.

Desserts at Saxon King are delightfully indulgent with honeycomb sundae, pecan tart and Irish cream and caramel cheesecake all on offer. Lighter bites, salads and sandwiches are also available, as well as a ‘Little Monsters’ menu for the kids.

Just 2 miles from the beach, The Saxon King pub is a 10-minute walk from Prittlewell Train Station.

As pub grub goes, this pub is one of the better in the area. We've been there as a family a few times now and every time, found the staff to be very 'classy' compared to most pub food establishments. The design of the pub is refreshing and the menu each time we've been, hasn't disappointed. This time, I particularly enjoyed the apple and pumpkin crumble!

Having booked a table for lunchtime for 8, we were all adults, we found ourselves seated in the childrens area with screaming toddlers! We requested to be moved, which we granted. However once we had our food we were not asked if we wanted dessert or tea/coffee at the end of our meal, waiting staff were very thin on the ground and after some considerable time we were just given the bill. I have dined here in the evening and found the service better. The food was nice with a good choice of menus.

Food good as always but we had to wait ages for our mains to arrive. I also found that the menu was very restricted. I wanted a pasta dish but when asked if they offered anything rather than lasagne, was told no. It was my birthday meal with my children and partner and friend but when we did finally get to eat , the food was good

Excellent service. Waiter was very considerate while we were waiting for the last person to arrive.
The food was good & tasty. It was a good meal & made more enjoyable as we were not hurried & could enjoy the company of our friends.

General food quality was good but never saw a person to ask for a plate to put our chicken bones on so were left on the table!
The jam rolly polly wasn't - it was just stodge that fell apart - again nobody to talk to. but over all the dining was a pleasant experience.
