Headed up by Alex Jackson - former Head Chef of 2 Stevie Parle restaurants - Rotorino & Dock Kitchen - Sardine brings wood-fired cooking inspired by the south of France to east London. An uber-cool, laidback venue, expect flavour-rich southern French dishes using the best quality, finest ingredients. Sardine is open for breakfast, lunch & dinner and uses a special "vertical grill" allowing for traditional cooking a la ficelle. Fresh garden peas 'a table' followed by some 'ideal-for-sharing' snacks compliment a menu of starters, mains and some generous sides with new dishes added each week. The wine list is constantly evolving with good value offerings by the glass / carafe and also on-tap. The French aperitif bar is run by Clotilde Lataille (formerly of Hawksmoor Spitalfields Bar) and impresses with Aix Dirty Martinis, Negroni Jaunes and more.

Three of us went to one of SARDINE's special evenings. This time the menu was based on olive oil and all the courses reflected this. A very pleasant waitress explained where the various olive oils had originated from in Italy. She couldn't have been more charming or friendly. Even though the food wasn't stunning, I'd say that the £28 for the meal was reasonable. We would definitely try SARDINE again.

This was an olive oil special menu. Stared with a great Dirty Martini. All the food that followed was imaginative, tasty, well-presented. Loved the introduction to the different olive oils - having one that had only been pressed 3 days old was amazing - and the fact the cheese had been made the day before at the restaurant itself. It is so good having a restaurant like this on our doorstep. We already feel the staff know us and the monthly menus are becoming a regular treat - feels like the little local restaurant you dream of having.

An excellent lunch. The Catalan starter of spring onions and Romesco sauce was delicious - nice nutty red pepper sauce not too refined and well grilled veg. Followed by a very tasty shin of beef with buttery wet polenta ( I hate slabs of bouncy polenta) with a rich beefy jus-simple but packed with flavour. Its all very unpretentious- really good food and wine choices and friendly and efficient staff. We loved the two girls who served us! I would definitely go again.

We have wanted to try Sardine for a while and went on what was a busy Thursday night. The food was average to good - the mushroom starter and fish stew were notable. We stayed towards the bottom end of the wine list and for 4 our bill came to £240 though that included 3 bottles of wine. Service was fine and the whole place had a good atmosphere. The menu could be limiting for some people though if you are looking for a place to eat in the Islington/Old Street area do give it a try. Advisable to book.

Absolutely beautiful food and friendly staff. Only complaint is it's a bit loud.

Really lovely food. Flavour rather than presentation. Wine to match from southern France and Italy.
