Ghigo runs the best restaurant in Wimbledon.
22 April 2016
San Lorenzo has been serving classic Italian dishes in Wimbledon since 1969. Elegant and homely indoors, a summer courtyard offers secluded al fresco dining.
Everything on the San Lorenzo menu is produced by hand using traditional methods, creating a range of authentic Italian dishes. Favourites include pappardelle with wild boar and mushroom ragu, King prawns with wholegrain risotto, and roasted guinea fowl in garlic, wine and rosemary. Amongst the selection of classic Romana-style pizzas, try the piccante with spicy sausage and chilli, or the melanzana with mozzarella, grilled aubergine and parmesan.
With a palm tree in the centre and striking artwork on the walls, the main dining room is a vibrant space. The rustic conservatory and secluded courtyard offer a more laid-back dining spot, whilst the naturally-lit mezzanine level overlooks the tranquil outdoor space.
A popular and prestigious neighbourhood restaurant, San Lorenzo London is just a 3-minute walk from Wimbledon Rail Station.

The food was lovely, although not much of it. We skipped the starters, as I usually struggle with a starter and main, but wished I'd had one in the end. I ordered the chicken with mozzarella, veg and mash, but I only had 2 stalks of asparagus and a small blob of mash. If I had known how small the portions were I would have ordered extra mash or veg. The table next to us ordered a pizza and pasta and their dished looked plentiful, but mine was certainly not. It was very tasty though and the sauce the chicken was in was beautiful. My husband had the lamb cutlets and paid extra for his mash. He said they were nice, but not the best he's had. We ended up sharing a dessert with our coffee at the end and the dessert was really nice - a pear and chocolate tart, although we waited 20 min's for our dessert to arrive and had to ask them to hurry as our taxi was due 15 min's later. All in all, the food was lovely, but pricey for what we actually received. They stuck an £8.00 service charge on, but for what we are not sure. We didn't get any bread sticks or bread to start, not much food and our dessert was late. We've just returned from California, where they provide great service and plentiful meals. As far as I am concerned, restaurants should earn their 'service charge/tips' not expect one for nothing.

Attentive friendly service. Food outstanding - every dish I've had, and I've been 3 times recently. Good honest, simple but tasty Italian cooking - none of your rubbishy chef's artistic creations - you get a proper meal here. Can be noisy if full, because of ceramic walls/floors. Not the cheapest but good value.

Good food (liked the bread) service slow and very very expensive. Better value restaurants around in Wimbledon by far.

Delightful occasion with friendly staff and an excellent atmosphere. My only negative comment is the food is served on lukewarm plates (something a great many restaurants seem to do) which means you have to eat fast as the food gets cold. It was not particularly hot to start with but was delicious.
