London’s oldest restaurant, Rules has provided the capital with traditional British food since 1798. Timelessly elegant, its illustrious history has seen the likes of Charles Dickens and H.G Wells sample the hearty menu.

As authentic as ever, the Rules menu is led by wild game and classic British dishes. Whole roast grouse and loin of venison highlight the rich variety of meats on offer, topped off by rabbit hotpot, and wild boar and mushroom pie. Dishes don’t come much more British than the rump of Lake District lamb with haggis bubble and squeak, or steamed steak and kidney suet pudding, whilst the likes of pheasant curry with basmati rice, and Loch Duart salmon with mussels and garam masala, add exotic touches to authentic cuisine.

Historic prints adorning the walls, the extravagance of the restaurant’s décor led poet John Betjeman to describe it as ‘unique and irreplaceable, and part of literary and theatrical London.’ Upstairs, the Rules cocktail bar with its glamorous menu and plush red seating, epitomises the old-fashioned elegance of the entire building.

In contrast to the bustle of neighbouring Covent Garden, the age-old sophistication of Rules restaurant London is a 6-minute walk from both Leicester Square and Covent Garden tube stations.

Love the decor and the traditional atmosphere. We had classic dishes thinking they would be the best and we were not disappointed. The desserts were excellent also. Very good family venue.

Wonderful meal at Rules. Restaurant is full of history and that is evident in the building itself and it's decor. Service was exceptional and we felt very looked after. Food was exquisite and more than enough on our plates. My husband has an intolerance to dairy and the chef prepared him meals that weren't on the menu so that he could be accommodated. Truly wonderful experience and would definitely recommend to anyone. Quite expensive so not an every day restaurant but certainly worth every penny. Cannot wait to return.

    Welcoming staff.
    Beautiful surroundings.
    Rustic hearty food.
    Disappointing cheeseboard.
    Rather pricey.
    Will definitely return.

Good solid British food - it does what it says on the label. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for in this world.
The doorman was great fun, very friendly and welcoming. The Front of House and waiting staff were less so, and left my party feeling less valued and welcome than perhaps they should have been. Our waiter's attitude was very strange: if he was trying to be humorous, he failed completely. Overall we felt we were an inconveninece to him and his colleagues.

We have dined at Rules on several occasions, usually with visitors from abroad. It is such a quintessentially English restaurant and our foreign guests are always bowled over by the experience. As always, Rules did not disappoint and we had a delicious meal. Prices are not cheap but you are paying for a unique event.

I chose the chicken but was very disappointed. My husband had the venison which was great. Great staff and ambience.
