London’s oldest restaurant, Rules has provided the capital with traditional British food since 1798. Timelessly elegant, its illustrious history has seen the likes of Charles Dickens and H.G Wells sample the hearty menu.

As authentic as ever, the Rules menu is led by wild game and classic British dishes. Whole roast grouse and loin of venison highlight the rich variety of meats on offer, topped off by rabbit hotpot, and wild boar and mushroom pie. Dishes don’t come much more British than the rump of Lake District lamb with haggis bubble and squeak, or steamed steak and kidney suet pudding, whilst the likes of pheasant curry with basmati rice, and Loch Duart salmon with mussels and garam masala, add exotic touches to authentic cuisine.

Historic prints adorning the walls, the extravagance of the restaurant’s décor led poet John Betjeman to describe it as ‘unique and irreplaceable, and part of literary and theatrical London.’ Upstairs, the Rules cocktail bar with its glamorous menu and plush red seating, epitomises the old-fashioned elegance of the entire building.

In contrast to the bustle of neighbouring Covent Garden, the age-old sophistication of Rules restaurant London is a 6-minute walk from both Leicester Square and Covent Garden tube stations.

Good food and drinks but not the best I've ever had. Good for a date night.

The food surpassed our expectations and was the highlight of the experience, but the house white wine was very cheap. We picked a bettter red for the main course and I tried the duck - it was a really good sized portion and cooked to perfection. The staff seemed very hurried and slightly stressed. Interesting interior, not much has changed for 200 years!

We have been told to choose this historical restaurant for its hunt specialities. Unfortunately the night we went there was no available plate with such a food but mainly fishes.
What we got (duck) was quite good however not at such level to justify the price it's been charged.

We dine at Rules every year, it is an excellent restaurant and the food in very good. Only negative this year is that the Waitress was slightly "off" - not to the usual expected standard.

Apart from helping the waiting staff clear the floor of broken glass our experience was very positive. The staff were very attentive, the food was excellent although slightly expensive for what it was.

Love the decoration, the flavour of the food was amazing. Waiting time for food was a little long however.
