London’s oldest restaurant, Rules has provided the capital with traditional British food since 1798. Timelessly elegant, its illustrious history has seen the likes of Charles Dickens and H.G Wells sample the hearty menu.

As authentic as ever, the Rules menu is led by wild game and classic British dishes. Whole roast grouse and loin of venison highlight the rich variety of meats on offer, topped off by rabbit hotpot, and wild boar and mushroom pie. Dishes don’t come much more British than the rump of Lake District lamb with haggis bubble and squeak, or steamed steak and kidney suet pudding, whilst the likes of pheasant curry with basmati rice, and Loch Duart salmon with mussels and garam masala, add exotic touches to authentic cuisine.

Historic prints adorning the walls, the extravagance of the restaurant’s décor led poet John Betjeman to describe it as ‘unique and irreplaceable, and part of literary and theatrical London.’ Upstairs, the Rules cocktail bar with its glamorous menu and plush red seating, epitomises the old-fashioned elegance of the entire building.

In contrast to the bustle of neighbouring Covent Garden, the age-old sophistication of Rules restaurant London is a 6-minute walk from both Leicester Square and Covent Garden tube stations.

Disappointing. I called early Saturday morning to change the reservation from 8:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and the reservations manager said that would be no problem. On arrival this was not in the book and the manager clearly did not believe me

We were eventually given a table close the the main door. The weather was cold and there were constant cold drafts as customers came in and out. Again the manager was unsympathetic to my request to be offered a different table

The food was indifferent. On 2 occasions I had to ask for drinks that had been ordered to be delivered

The French waiter was sarcastic at best and rude at worst

I used to go to this restaurant a lot. The standards have fallen

    To be avoided now

An excellent evening, a combination of good food and service, what more can you ask for, will certainly be back.

Very good service. Very good meal. Pity it is no time for grouse. We enjoyed a lot.

Overpriced, rude staff. Food was average. Not bad, but average. Nothing special or memorable.

Best thing about Rules is the ambiance and history. The food is mediocre - uninspired cooking and very expensive.

Rules is a fantastic venue with excellent food and very good service. Would advise you to book in advance with a table not too close to the front of the restaurant as you can hear noises outside clearly from there and those tables are a bit small and we felt like we were on top of other guests. Would recommend the cocktail menu to start off your experience here - its superb.
