    Dined at this restaurant last night (Friday 2nd December) and we chose the taster menu. The food was fantastic and although the place was full and buzzing we were well looked after and the tables had sufficient distance between them to have some privacy in conversation.

    This was out first time we have visited Roger Hickman's and we certainly were not disappointed. Our favourite dish if we have to pick one was the Dedham Vale Beef. Definitely will be visiting again.

    The food was excellent and the set lunch time menu was very good value for money, £20 for 2 and £25 for 3 courses. My starter of mackerel was lovely and fresh and smelt of the sea! Our waiter was charming and knowledgeable. The only thing that did niggle a little was the service charge added to the bill I felt this should be discretionary, if the manager feels his staff deserve more money then it should be down to them to include it in their wages. Incidentally I very seldom refrain from leaving a tip.

    A long wait. Our party of four arrived at 8pm and the menu looked very tempting. The choice of five starters, five mains and five desserts was varied and perfectly adequate as far as we were concerned. The wine list was impressive if a bit pricey. By 8.15 we had ordered starters and mains and had begun on a bottle of wine. A plateful of tasty little savouries arrived quite quickly. This was followed by the 'Chef's appetiser' which we can now see was an indicator that starters would take a little time to arrive. By 8.45, as the starters appeared, we had finished our bottle of wine and ordered another. Despite the savouries, the appetisers, the complimentary bread and the starters, we were growing rather hungry. Sadly, we had another hour to wait before there was any sign of the mains, and one of them was cold. This was removed and replaced within ten minutes or so, but left one of the party looking on as the rest of us tucked in. The food was excellent, as many of the other reviews testify, but an hour and a three quarters between arrival and main course was longer than we would be prepared to tolerate in future. We asked the waiter if this kind of delay was usual. Would the service have been better if we'd booked to eat earlier, or on a different day? 'No,' we were assured. An hour's wait for a main could not be improved upon (longer if you have to send food back to be reheated, of course). Reluctantly, because the fault lay with the management system rather than the staff, we deducted the service charge from the bill. This restaurant is certainly worth a visit, but my advice would be to decide beforehand what you want to eat, order it immediately you sit down, take full advantage of the unlimited supply of bread and be ready for life to proceed at a very slow pace indeed.

    We really enjoyed our meal, the canapés were incredibly tasty. I had the fois grais starter and loved the flavours and textures. The halibut was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented, I found the combination of vegetables served a little sweet but was still overall delicious.
    My husband had the scallops, he'd have liked a squeeze of lemon but really enjoyed it!
    The beef dish looked gorgeous, peferectly cooked but my husband also found the combination of vegetables a little sweet.
    The pumpkin soup was beautiful, loved the salt and vinegar twist to it.
    I was really excited about the gin and tonic palate cleanser, the green sorbet tasted so fresh but the pieces of cucumber were a little sour for me (sorry, not a criticism, just wanted to give honest feedback)
    Dessert......You never fail to impress us!
    My husband had the poached pear...
    He went very quiet (which rarely happens) and asked me what the flavour was he couldn't put his finger on
    He said the gingerbread flavours took him straight back to his childhood and I actually thought he might shed a tear!
    I loved every single element of my lemon dessert.
    I asked our waitress for a coffee and could she recommend a liquer to accompany it, I can't remember what I was served but it was so delicious I ordered another!

    Excellent presentation, great flavours, great atmosphere, superb service. I would have liked a slightly larger choice of dishes on the menu but what we had was delicious. I would recommend this restaurant.

    A very enjoyable evening with friends. Pleasant atmosphere, attentive knowledgeable staff, good choice of menu, tasty well presented food. We will definitely go again.
    The only negative was that having told the restaurant in advance that two of the party did not eat cheese, half of the canapés contained blue cheese - a bowl of nuts arrived a few minutes later as a substitute but was not quite the same.

    Thank you for the opportunity to comment on our experience at the restaurant. We're writing this because we felt there was much to enjoy and a great deal of potential, but that our overall experience, relative to other restaurants at a similar price point both in the UK and abroad, was a little disappointing.
    There's a character limit so we'll keep our thoughts brief, and hope you consider them constructive.
    - Staff were warm and friendly and the ambience was very nice indeed.
    - However we felt that a reception/maitre d' role was lacking: no one met us at the door or showed us out.
    - No one poured our wine or refilled our glasses.
    - We were unsure why we had different waiting staff at each course - altogether these issues left a slightly uncoordinated impression.
    - In general, there was much evidence of 'cooking skill', and clearly much time and trouble had been taken over the menu.
    - However we both felt that the dishes would have benefited from greater coordination between flavours.
    -- A mackerel starter contained only a small amount of mackerel and a range of flavours that overwhelmed the fish.
    -- A duck main course had some beautifully cooked breast, but came with *both* a subtle, earthy bean/grain/truffle side dish *and* a sharp, sour sauce which contradicted and overwhelmed it; meanwhile the confit section of the dish was dry and rather tasteless.
    -- A poached pear pudding came with so little pear, and so many other flavours and textures that the pear was again overwhelmed.
    - There was a delay of more than 45-minutes between our starters being cleared and our main courses arriving; when they did, the halibut was dry and appeared that it had been under a hotplate (perhaps while the other main course was delayed?) - even without the overcooking, it was again overwhelmed by a range of different flavours and textures that seemed to be designed to show off the kitchen's skill rather than seriously to complement the dish.
    Overall potential 5*
