A former butchers, Rodean near Exeter was converted into a restaurant in 1983. The regularly changing menu uses local, seasonal produce to create rich British and European dishes.

Start with the homely slow-cooked pork belly with black pudding and spiced chutney, or the intriguing goats’ cheese tart with poached pear and apple snow. Main dishes on the Rodean menu focus on fine, fresh meat and fish, expertly complemented by seasonal flavours. Try the loin of local venison with cranberry sauce, carved onto a chestnut and balsamic roasted baby onion tart, or the Cornish hake with seared scallops, served on wilted spinach and toasted hazelnuts.

Desserts are every bit as hearty, and include a rich trilogy of chocolate, and a sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and West Country clotted cream. Cosily decorated in warm colours, rustic artwork adorns the walls at Rodean Kenton.

Rodean in Devon is surrounded by idyllic countryside. Starcross Train Station is just a 5-minute drive away, whilst Exeter can be reached in 15 minutes.

Overall we had a wonderful evening at Rodeans.
Initially I was concerned as I try to eat a vegetarian diet although I am not strict and allow myself a treat once in a while! I would say that the provision for vegetarians is limited at Rodeans. Although they do provide options that are not on the menu if requested, they are a little stayed and I think given the innovative and creative vegetarian dishes that are becoming more common recently, it is a shame that the thought and skill that goes into creating the a la carte dishes at Rodeans is not reflected in the vegetarian options.
However, I chose to throw out my rulebook for the night and had a smoked salmon risotto starter and a roasted hake main course. Both dishes were outstanding- I wish I could achieve such a light yet creamy risotto at home!
The ambience is warm and inviting but could have been a little more lively and as the restaurant is quite intimate you feel aware that others can very easily hear everything you say.
Rodeans is moderately expensive but once you account for the excellent service, warm atmosphere, quality of the food and moreover the complimentary items (an artisan bread basket, an amuse bouche and with my coffee came petit fours), I really think it is perfectly good value for a special evening.
The only reason I have omitted to give a five star review is that outlined above regarding the vegetarian options.
I have been three times now and will continue to visit when I want a more special dining experience than scoffing a burger at Hubbox (nothing wrong with that either)!

Lovely meal - everything was delicious. Slight delay over serving of dessert due to young waitress, but we were having a nice time anyway.

Hello. I came for the 1st time to your restaurant on valentines night. The starters and main meal was very tasty and full of flavour. But we were very disappointed in the desert for sharers especially since I asked the waitress for her opinion. She said it was a large plate full of all the deserts and there was 2 of each so we can both savour them. Not impressed with the size of the portions, the fact that we had to share each one as there wasn't 2 each, and there was no cheese as that was part of ur desert menu !!!!! So for the perfect meal was very disappointing because of the desert
    Thanks

Jenny and I have been coming to Roedean since 2003 and since then have probably dined there 3 to4 times a year, sometimes more. It sounds trite but we have eaten in many restaurants around the world and always compare them to Roedean and most times you come out on top.

Very enjoyable Sunday lunch, quantity, quality and attentive staff was perfect and all represented very good value. The Lamb was cooked very well and very tender with a variety of fresh cooked vegetables.

Wonderful food. Good selection from the a la carte without being overwhelmed by choices. Presented and served well. Lovely ambience in the restaurant. Very reasonable prices for food of this high quality.
