In conjunction with the 4-star Farnley Tower guest house, a beautiful old building dating back to 1870, Restaurant DH1 is a small fine dining restaurant in Durham. Relaunched in March 2014, DH1’s stunning contemporary cuisine offsets its stoic surroundings.

Using the finest seasonal ingredients, the Restaurant DH1 menu features roast venison rump with cauliflower puree, salt-baked beetroot, Harrogate Blue and venison jus. Slow cooked pork belly and cheek with smoked eel, Granny Smith apple, onions and soy exhibits the creative licensing that allows DH1’s food to excel.

Decadent tasting menus are a 7-course feast of the restaurant’s finest fare, while there are also carefully crafted vegetarian selections. Gingerbread parfait with rhubarb variations and pistachio is just one of a selection of celebrated desserts at the DH1 restaurant in Durham.

The sleek purple and silver styling of Restaurant DH1 is distinctive against the rustic stone façade of Farnley Tower. The restaurant overlooks the city in Durham, and is a 12-minute walk from Durham Train Station.

The food and wine was exemplary - loved every taste and mouthful, absolutely delicious. However we felt the whole experience was marred by the somewhat sterile atmosphere of the dining area. Lighting is not good, a very stark room and no carpets or rugs makes for noisy conversation and you can hear everyone else's conversation. Also the service was a bit cold and indifferent and without any warmth. Initially the food takes a while to arrive and meanwhile you're hungry.

Another excellent meal in my favourite Durham City restaurant. Visiting friends rated the overall meal/service/value for money experience better than the Michelin starred restaurant we visited the following night.

This was my second visit to DH1 and the high standard of the first visit was maintained. The staff were friendly and attentive without being obsequious and the food was delicious. Particular favourite with me and my son, who was dining with me, was the duck and the puddings were excellent. The overall experience was pleasant and certainly justifies further visits

Unusual dishes with locally sourced food. Really well presented and very tasty.

The menu did not have a great choice of dishes. What was there was good. The service was good and not rushed. The restaurant itself is difficult to locate if you follow a sat nav.

    Disappointing and therefore v expensive.
Taster menus can be wonderfully exciting and can allow the chef to excel in creativity. Not here sadly. Food was bland, unimaginative and I would not recommend it.
The Space was lovely, quiet and clean but freezing. I had to wear my coat though-out the whole meal.

Restaurant was quiet so a bit lacking in atmosphere, however the visit was on a Tuesday in January so this was not unexpected.
Food as usual was excellent with attentive service. You always get your table for the whole evening so you are never rushed through your meal.
Although we took two courses from the á la carte menu ( plus complementary canapés and chocolates) I was pleased to see there is now a shorter market tasting menu as well as the full tasting menu, both of which can be taken with paired wines.

My friend and I booked an 8 course 'tasting menu'. We have never tasted such exquisite food before. Every course was bursting with flavour and presented beautifully. We shall remember DH1 for a long time.
