A beautiful redbrick hotel dating back to 1704, The Plough & Harrow presents refined British cuisine for lunch, dinner and afternoon tea in its elegant dining and lounge rooms. Dining in the main restaurant is a sophisticated and formal experience, whilst afternoon tea can be taken in the relaxed lounge or on the sun-drenched terrace.

The Plough & Harrow restaurant menu is graced by 12 hour-cooked pork belly with apple and honey purée, and a pan-fried Mediterranean sea bass with squid ink linguine, mussels and vermouth sauce. Rhubarb ‘5 ways’ is an enigmatic end to proceedings, and sits on the dessert list next to a white chocolate torte with chocolate gel and sugared mint leaves.

A light menu in The Plough & Harrow lounge features dainty sandwich options like smoked salmon and cream cheese, and pink roast beef with vine tomatoes and rocket, alongside salads and sharing platters. Indulgent afternoon tea is a traditional collection of finger sandwiches, freshly-baked scones and a chocolate fancy.

Just a 10-minute walk from the centre of Birmingham on Hagley Road, The Plough & Harrow Hotel enjoys a tranquil, leafy pocket of the city.

    1. No one at reception so queued behind a hotel guest requiring help. Receptionist appeared from behind a screened off section after about 4 minutes waiting chewing food. Presumably been having her lunch, (it was about 1.55).
    2. Waitress very nice, friendly and efficient.
    3. Prosecco we chose was not available. Stock control must be a basic thing to get right surely?
    4. My vegetarian afternoon tea arrived with smoked salmon sandwiches.
    5. Some of the sandwiches had obviously been made with the outside of the sliced loaf and had a dried texture.
    6. Cakes were high on sugar content and very low in flavour. Usually an indication of cheapness.
    8. Tea good but not very hot.
    9. Good waitress replaced with a waiter, no tie, generally slightly dishevelled who promptly disappeared. Was going to have another glass of prosecco but gave up and left.
    10. Decor pleasant and calm atmosphere.

Enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea with a friend. It was very quiet for a Sunday though. It was a lovely atmosphere with a pianist adding to the atmosphere. Staff were very friendly

Experience was 'average' - we were never offered a menu - just asked 'Do you want tea ?' as we sat down. Being a vegetarian I had to guess what the sandwiches contained when they were put down . But we did not allow these details to spoil our afternoon. The scones were warm and tasty. Disabled parking easy to find and use.

There was confusion over our seating when email said seating in restaurant. Wasn't asked if we wanted tea or coffee was just brought both when we preferred tea. Apart from that good very good so would go again.
