In a beautiful medieval setting, The Spread Eagle restaurant in Midhurst seamlessly blends the old and the new. Exposed brickwork, beamed ceilings and hanging tapestries fill the dining space, with the huge inglenook fireplace undeniably the focal point. Stained glass windows allow for an ambient light, while the contemporary British menu brings the restaurant up to date.

Utilising the best of local produce, diners can enjoy succulent cuts of lamp rump served with mashed potato and tomato salsa, and crispy confit duck leg with Asian spiced vegetable salad from The Spread Eagle menu. A grill menu serves up lemon sole with garlic butter and triple cooked chips, while vegetarian dishes include indulgent twice-baked old Sussex cheddar soufflé with double cream.

During the summer, The Spread Eagle restaurant at The Spread Eagle Hotel & Spa in West Sussex offers lunch al fresco in the hotel’s courtyard and terrace, enjoying views over the hotel’s stunning grounds.

With a well-seasoned British menu and a historic dining setting, The Spread Eagle hotel in Midhurst sits 17 minutes’ drive from Liphook train station.

    Excellent afternoon tea

I had afternoon tea in the conservatory at the spread eagle hotel. Al in all it was a lovely experience. One unusual feature was that before choosing which tea you wanted to try some samples of all the tea were brought out so you could smell them and chose which one you liked. The food was nice, scones fresh and crumbly and it was all served by a friendly and polite waiter. I'd definitely recommend this to people, having been to afternoon teas and a number of different places this one was a good one and very reasonably priced (especially because I made use of the afternoon tea website and found a 25% off voucher, but even at full price it would still be good value). My only slight negative would be that I got a little warm in the conservatory but there were seats outside on the terrace which we could have chosen.

The experience of Vintage tea was completely spoilt when, on leaving, I was told, insistently, that I owed money (see below)j.

Awonderful afternoon. The staff made us extremely welcome and pleased we were sharing our Diamond Annioversary in the same hotel as our honeymoon 60 years ago.The tea was worth waiting for and the local sparkling wine was a very special to us. If you wish to be pampered the Spread Eagle is the place to go

Hotel was delightful. We had afternoon tea served in the sitting room which had 2 log fires roaring away, making a very welcome feel. The afternoon tea itself was very average and expensive for what it was, 4 finger sandwiches, one scone and a poor choice of cakes - the chocolate cake very heavy and too rich and the fruit cake dry, the lemon cake was okay.
Would not recommend for afternoon tea.
