Over 400 years old and reportedly haunted, Red Lion Avebury is an historic thatched pub just outside Marlborough. Set inside an ancient stone circle attraction, a great selection of hearty recipes are served, along with cask ales.

Specialising in trusty, home-cooked British recipes, the Red Lion menu is made up of time-honoured classics and inventive chef’s specials. The signature beef & ale pie is a creation from much-loved celebrity chef Tom Kerridge, while favourite world flavours include sizzling steak fajitas, or aubergine and roast beetroot curry. Gourmet sandwiches and jacket potatoes are served throughout the day, and guests can round things off with an indulgent crumble, cheesecake or sundae.

The drinks list at Red Lion pub features carefully-chosen beers and international wines, and a lengthy list of soft drinks. Younger diners are not forgotten, with a varied menu for both lunch and dinner, and a mini roast served on Sundays.

With exposed beams and stonework inside, Red Lion is full of traditional character, and sits 20 minutes' drive from Pewsey Rail Station.

Very disappointing. Numerous items on the menu were not available because of some problem in the kitchen. Five out of six dishes we chose were not available. The staff didn't even seem particularly sorry about it. The place also seemed understaffed with frequent long waits at the bar to make orders.

Having read reviews I was a little worried as I was taking 6 colleagues with me but no need as the food was very good and service good as well. The food came out fairly quickly once it was ordered and the only delays were at the very busy bar ordering, paying and getting drinks. All in all I thought the meal very good and the restaurant pleasant to eat in. We will be going again as the meals were too big to allow for dessert and we all wanted Baked Alaska.

This is a very busy restaurant pub in the heart of historic Avebury. We have been several times but never booked. Glad we did as the sun had brought a huge crowd to the village and stones. We arrived early but were accommodated at our table and staff were courteous and welcoming. Wonderful Sunday roasts on offer as well as the normal menu and despite numbers there was no undue wait for food. Excellent day and will return.
