Situated in a Victorian redbrick building, Michelin-starred Purnell’s restaurant in Birmingham is a chic and contemporary dining space. Seamlessly fusing the heritage of its residence with modern accents in the dining room, the stylish restaurant space is flooded with natural light from the classically-Victorian arched windows.

With the living room restaurant space dedicated to sociable and relaxed fine dining, the Purnell’s menu offers a variety of inventive ‘Brummie tapas’ dishes, ideal for sharing. Sample dishes include spiced potato and lime croquettes with duck egg mayonnaise, and neck of lamb with capers and basil emulsion.

A selection of tasting menus are also available at the West Midlands restaurant, offering dishes such as tail fillet of beef rolled in liquorice charcoal, and waffles with foie gras butter with crispy chicken skin. A classic 3 or 5-course lunch menu offers contemporary British cuisine, such as duck breast with apple and celeriac puree, and roasted plaice with confit tomato and pickled shallots.

Offering informal fine dining and Michelin-starred cuisine, Purnell’s in Birmingham sits 6 minutes’ walk from Snow Hill train station.

We went for a fixed price deal. The staff were attentive and the food was well prepared and displayed. However, portions were extremely small and had it not been for the large portion of bread and butter served at the beginning we would have left hungry. In our opinion the drinks were expensive and the wine list quite narrow and expensive. Decor was almost retro 80's, not sure if that was the desired effect. This was our first time at Purnell's and in our opinion it did not compare well with other good Birmingham fine dining experiences, either by atmosphere or value for money.

excellent mains and puddings, starters not so good. The smoked eel in the scallop starter was less than half a centimetre cubed.

Lovely surroundings; friendly unobtrusive staff; relaxed atmosphere and fantastic food - in taste and appearance. Our particular favourite was the duck egg dish. Would highly recommend the 6 course tasting menu. Easy to find - pretty much round the corner from Bull Street metro stop, which cost £1 from New Street train station.

We had the Brummie Tapas on the shared table in the Living Room
The food was consistently good and inventive.
Liked the idea of the chefs coming out and explaining each course and answering any questions we asked. Favourites included the slow cooked neck of lamb and the octopus in red wine.
Sommelier very good and her recommendation matched the food well.
Eponymous chef past table, but did not acknowledge.

Very hard to make a choice. We chose the set lunch option. The beetroot starter was wonderful with the horseradish the highlight for us. The milk chicken and especially the accompanying mushroom paste was delicious. Pear tatre tatin a bit tough, but scored heavily on the lemon dust. Gorgeous presentation of the lovely sweet accompaniment to the coffee. The bread was the best anywher home or abroad! We have completed our trip adviser review

Another fantastic evening at Purnell's! It had been beautifully redecorated with a viewing window to observe the wonderful Glynn Purnell at work. The meal started quietly but got better and better. Our particular favourites were the scallops, monkfish masala, the vension and ALL the puddings which I recommend with the Plum infused Saki. Lots of theatre but not at the expense of the food.
