Lovely restaurant on the Torbay seafront. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was delicious.

On the Rocks has a fantastic location. Our vegetarian Sunday lunch - the Nut Roast was nice and the accompanying vegetables were well cooked and presented. However there were two sauces with meal instead of gravy and although they were nice, gravy would have been appreciated. Our bottle of Rioja was fine, however the wine list itself was small and unadventurous. So all in all a good but not excellent experience.

We went to this restaurant on the Sunday evening during the August Bank Holiday. It was obviously busy, which was a good sign for a Sunday night, but the first thing that struck us was the noise level. The walls are tiled, so speech and laughter etc, echo around the restaurant, which not only makes conversation difficult, but also results in a lack of ambiance. It looks like a TexMex restaurant without the ornamentation - bench style seats and plank tables are hardly suitable for supposed fine dining.
We arrived at 20:55 for a 21:00 booking and we were promptly seated and given menus. It went downhill from thereon. At 21:20 the waitress informed us that the kitchen was very busy and she had been told to hold back on our order. She finally took our order at 21:35 and we received our starters at 21:55 - exactly one hour after we arrived. I did enjoy my scallops, but £10.95 for two very small scallops which are caught locally, is outrageously expensive. I had rump of lamb for my main course, which when presented looked like a pile of green cabbage (this is what I mean by pretentious). It was basically a teepee of barely blanched cabbage (rigid enough to stand by itself) , sprinkled with feta cheese, covering four small pieces of fatty lamb and sun dried tomatoes. The overall effect was very unpleasant indeed - way too salty with virtually raw cabbage and inedible meat. In fairness to the restaurant, when I pointed out the quality of the meat, they did remove it from the bill.
If this review had been written on my meal alone, I would have given it one star, but my wife quite enjoyed her pork cheek (albeit a very small piece of pork) and gurnard, so begrudgingly I have awarded it two stars
I left the restaurant virtually as hungry as I arrived and will not be visiting again. I feel this restaurant is striving to be something it isn't. It is a missed attempt at fine dining in a pub atmosphere, but with extortionate prices.

The food was excellent. Loved it but the only thing slightly off putting was the fact that the tables were so close together.
