We had a lovely meal. We were early and, I think, the only folk present! Sorry we had to rush but we had an appointment elsewhere.

At the forefront of British grilling, Bar 1815 at the Durham Marriott Hotel Royal County boasts traditional cuisine with expertly grilled meats and fish. On the ground floor of the hotel, the restaurant exudes warmth and comfort as you savour the food.

Primarily orientated around the accomplished grill, local meats are used to craft the freshest, most flavoursome, dishes. Succulent examples include spiced chicken skewers with pine nut, pineapple and sultana rice, or the sustainable catch of the day. There are also crowd-pleasing signature dishes to diversify the menu, such as roasted lamb with caramelised shallots, Wensleydale cauliflower cheese and claret jus. Afternoon tea is served either in Bar 1815 or on the Pommery Champagne Terrace.

This iconic property dates back to 1630, showcasing a combination of classic and modern design. Whilst high-backed leather chairs and oak flooring emphasise the restaurant's classical roots, the modern artwork, and the side stations clad in a bold blue milk glass, give the restaurant a contemporary edge.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Bar 1815 is just a 10-minute walk from Durham Train Station and the university.

Very poor, inattentive staff, unappetising food, overpriced and a very dry atmosphere. I wish I hadn't booked this afternoon tea, I took my family here for Father's Day and it ruined the day. The hotel
needs to make a large number of improvements if it wants to retain customers.

Overall nothing to complain about, food was ok , wine rather overpriced , Decor in the restaurant very dated , felt like an old ladies sitting room and had the same vibe but the staff were exceptional , friendly , accommodating and happy , it makes a difference to feel welcomed

Afternoon tea itself was absolutely fine. Lots to choose from on the stand. All fresh and an interesting mix. The scones were particularly well received. However when we have had afternoon tea in the past, a member of staff has always brought the food out and explained what the sandwiches were and what the cakes were etc. This was not done on this occasion, with the stands simply being put down. Our group were seated right next to a television which was on and there was also background music. I asked the server if she could turn the television down which she did promptly as it was rather distracting.
The other distraction was a group of children and adults who were allowing the children to run and scream around the lobby area - not particularly safe when members of staff were carrying teapots and hot food. When one group left their afternoon tea, the children went over and started helping themselves to the leftovers, with one little boy playing with a tea pot. I appreciate that the hotel have no control over their guests but it did not create a good impression.
I just felt like the whole experience was not as special as afternoon tea experiences in the past. Service was OK - we had to ask for milk. After our initial drink we were not offered any more drinks.

I had one bar meal during my stay, which was good, except for the size of the portions, which, for a 'starter' and 'light bite' were far too big. The bar-man apologised for not warning me and reduced the size of the starter, and the price, which was appreciated.
