Sitting behind the village green and next to the village pond, Merlin’s Cave Chalfont St Giles is a 17th-century pub serving classic dishes with modern twists. The venue boasts a scenic garden for warmer weather, whilst inside, the restaurant sits behind the traditional and cosy bar area.

The Merlin’s Cave menu blends British pub favourites with Mediterranean flavours. Discover the chef’s own duck dumplings and salmon and dill fish cakes, or from the grill, try the indulgent burger stack, or a fillet steak with hand-cut chips. Flavour-rich vegetarian options include grilled aubergine with ratatouille and goats’ cheese, and stuffed courgettes with spinach, pine nuts, creamed leeks and a roasted red pepper sauce.

The Merlin’s Cave bar offers a range of real ales, lagers and bottled beers as well as an impressive selection of world wines. Mixing rustic furniture with modern industrial décor, the restaurant adds a contemporary feel to the building’s rustic charm.

A charming country pub, Merlin’s Cave in Buckinghamshire is a short stroll from the historic cottage and museum of author John Milton. The market town of Amersham and its tube station are a 5-minute drive away.

a nice restaurant with good food. We both had the roast which was very nice but the veg was a bit undercooked. The service was ok but they seemed very rushed and short staffed

Excellent menu, nicely presented good, good attentive service. All very good except the coffee which was undrinkably bitter

I had eaten here previously and the food had been very good. On this occasion, my companion and I started with the black pudding, bacon and poached egg on mashed potato with Hollandaise sauce. Although the various elements were very tasty, it was served up cold and on a very cold plate. The sauce had congealed and the poached egg, though perfectly cooked, was chilled. I suspected it had been pre-cooked and only partially warmed. We did not send it back because reheating a soft poached egg is not a good idea. My companion said her main course of pea risotto was bland, though at her request the waiter brought some grated parmesan which improved the flavour. My fish and chips also came on a very cold plate. The fish was slightly undercooked so I could only eat the thin end of the fillet. Neither of us drinks white wine so we ordered red, and the £19 Malbec was not nice. Though the food was disappointing, I must say that the service was splendid. The waiters were wonderful, and the décor is lovely. That the food was not hot was surprising, especially given that the restaurant was only half full and there seemed to be at least 2 chefs on duty.

The fish and chips were very tasty and the batter was light . Cottage pie was also a success. Unfortunately where we were sitting was rather draughty and the cutlery basket was too close to our table causing disturbance and and noise.
