Firmly holding a Michelin star since 2006, Masons Arms blends classic pub charm and exquisite fine dining delicacies. Set in a 13th-century thatched cottage, owner and chef Mark Dodson brings 12 years’ experience working under Michel Roux.

Transforming honest, locally sourced ingredients into flawless creations, the Masons Arms menu showcases superb culinary skill. Crisply presented Masons restaurant dishes include monkfish loin wrapped in prosciutto with potato puree, or roulade of pork belly, braised red cabbage and apple compote.

Innovative twists for dessert include rhubarb trio or chocolate parfait and mandarin sorbet, or enjoy dainty macarons, homemade fudge and rich coffee. Guests can enjoy a sterling international wine list sourced from boutique growers either in the quaint, farmhouse-style dining room, or out on the lush terrace during summer.

A gem set in the heart of the Devonshire countryside, Masons Arms Knowstone was awarded the prestigious accolade of Michelin’s Pub of the Year in 2010.

We both chose the Lunch menu; we both had the terrine starter (which we both thought was great), my wife had the duck main course (which she enjoyed but couldn't finish) and I had the sea bass with mussels (which I enjoyed) and I finished with the chocolate parfait. We both had coffee to follow and came with macaroons (which were melt in the mouth gorgeous) and lovely fudge. The food was all beautifully presented and perfectly cooked, and the service was just right being attentive but unintrusive. The decor was restrained but well judged and the view across the fields and trees was beautiful. We will definitely be going back. Be aware that Knowstone is a small village and be prepared to park in the road if all the parking spaces are already full.

While the service was friendly, the food wasn't quite what I expected. The halibut was overcooked and the sauce a bit dense. I was hoping for a delectable meal, and sadly I was disappointed.

Excellent cuisine in a relaxed rural environment. Lamb and sea bass were excellent. As were the homemade bread rolls. Service was attentive as ever it was our first visit for lunch and it was the same high standard that we have previously enjoyed in evenings.

I loved the atmosphere in the whole building, from the pleasant greeting upon arrival, to the unhurried yet efficient taking of orders and seating. The food arrived very promptly, but we never felt rushed - we were very surprised to discover we had spent 2 and a half hours chatting over delicious food, and would love to visit again.

Very good Sunday lunch. First-rate beef and the rest of the meal matched it. No complaints at all.
