very slow service, food ok but mostly cold and side orders forgotten, overpriced...not a great experience for a special family birthday. However, the staff were polite and responded to our complaints by substantially reducing the bill.

All the food was delicious and well presented. Interesting menu choices. I can recommend the crispy pork terrine for a starter.

Our experience at Malmaison Brasserie was rather disappointing. Having booked a great deal through Bookatable we were looking forward to an exceptional dining experience. We had a last minute cancellation in our party so I went in to notify the team 30 mins before our booking so that they could alter our table - but this wasn't done at all. I was also called Sir by the lady I spoke to, I'm visibly a female!! There was inconsistency in the timings in our food being served, having to wait a few minutes for each different dish that had been ordered for each course. My starter of salt & pepper squid was more like squid in tasteless batter on a bed of mushy tomatoes. The chicken was undercooked and when checking this with a waitress she agreed. When the same mentioned for the other chicken dish on our table the waiter dismissed this as our lack on knowledge on the colour and texture of poussin. They took the cost of these 2 chicken mains off our bill without it having to be requested. Having had such high hopes for a great dining experience will definitely not be going back.

A most enjoyable evening. Pleasant staff, good setting and menu choices. The Spring lamb was a generous portion and delicious. The cheeseboard was outstanding as was my wife's choice of the dessert sampler of three taster portions. Wine list limited but good. Best new restaurant meal in ages.

Honestly the worst restaurant I've ever been to. To start, nobody was working on the door so it took 10 minutes for them to realise to seat us (not the staffs fault) once seated we had the menus brought over promptly and we ordered. Half hour later our salads arrived, the squid was tasteless and the terrine was OK. A further half hour passed before the main arrived, we both had the lamb, it was a decent sized portion of lamb but that was the only good thing to say about it. The veg tasted like it was from frozen, the meat was dry. Onto desert and again the cheese board was terrible. All in all for £65 with service added automatically to my bill...I'd have rather gone to a mcdonalds. (Our waiter was lovely, they were just so severely understaffed in the kitchen).

This was our third visit to Malmaison and our previous two were a little disappointing but thought that as there was now a new menu it may be a little better.
Cannot fault the service as it was attentive and pleasant but unfortunately the food was a step down from previous experiences. They say that the new Chez Mal brasserie has an industrial chic style and that there is simply no cooler restaurant in Reading, how bare brickwork makes it cool escapes me. The food is what we went for and it was disappointing. We dined from the Prix Fixe Menu. My wife had the salt and pepper squid where more attention had been given to the salad upon which it was placed but it was covered in an unexplainable dressing. My crispy Gloucester old spot pork terrine looked like a fish finger with a brown blob balanced on the end very little taste and was in need of something to go with it.
For mains my wife had the bang bang chicken which if she had read the menu properly would know that it would be chicken on the bone which unfortunately is something that she does not eat, Now this turned out to my advantage as I now had a chicken to eat which took my mind of my West Country Lamb Shoulder which was so covered in sea salt that it was unpleasant. My complaint on previous visits has been that the vegetables are never cooked sufficiently. This time they had gone to another level with raw peas that had not even seen the inside of a saucepan.
I would like to say that I would return but I think that would be highly unlikely

Excellent meal at the Malmaison in Reading. Their current offer - 2 courses and a glass of Prosecco for £19.95 - great value with menu choices that were fresh, seasonal and delicious. The spring vegetable soup as a starter excellent, the sea trout as main was outstanding and others in our party had the Pepper Squid followed by BangBang Chicken. All of us commented on the high quality of the food, how much we enjoyed the meal and what excellent value for money the evening was. Looking forward to going back soon!

It was a gift for my Dad's 60th birthday and he absolutely loved the experience! He is a big foodie so he and his wife enjoyed the food immensely and said the service and lovely touches for his birthday made for a perfect evening which they will always remember.
