My experience was not what I expected! I made an afternoon tea first of all by the website, I left a question about a dietary request on which I never received an answer.
Next to that, I made a reservation for 12:30pm and arrived 12:25pm, the staff literally let everyone queue in front of the restaurant and wait till 12:30pm to tell us that the were not ready yet... I think that is super strange.
Furthermore, I made a reservation for the afternoon tea, and I get the menue what we would like to eat... a bit strange when you make a reservation. At 14:30PM, the supervisor arrives to our table and tells us that we have to leave before 15:00PM, because they need the table. Not hospitable at all, they could have told us before or in another way.
Next to that, I asked several times to pay, different waiters forget to bring the bill. £3.50 service charge is already added to my bill, which I think is extremely rude to add, especially in this situation. Normally I would not pay this at all, especially not after such bad service. However, I just wanted to leave as fast as possible because I was so done with this experience. Lastly, the "supervisor lady" got the payment and she literally left, no thanks, no goodbye.
I was super shocked by this experience, especially since I expected a lot more from this hotel/restaurant/bar. The service staff is rude and poor, I was super dissapointed by this super bad experience!!!!!!

We arrived early, before the restaurant was properly open, but we were made very very welcome and taken to a nice table where we could have our drinks away from the cacophony of the bar. The name of our waitress sadly escapes me, as she was absolutely wonderful and I wish I could give her an accolade by name. Attentive, Efficient, great sense of humour, we loved her. In fact all staff were smashing. I had chicken parfait for starters. There was a lot of parfait and not much bread with it but the waitress recognise this and brought more bread. I think their should just be more on the plate to start with. The parfait was lovely. My son had shrimp tails and prawns which he enjoyed. There was plenty of it and a nice dip and some great chutney/dip/jam type stuff which also went extremely well with my chicken parfait, giving it more flavour which it did need a bit. Suggest adding this side to the chicken? For our main course we both had the venison dish. What can I say? I have eaten venidon in many places around the world and in some of the best michelin star restaurants. I am sure I have never before had such lovely venison. We both opted for medium. It was melt in the mouth. The sauce and delicate accompanying ingredients were mouth watering. We were recommended to have buttered cabbage as a side dish and it worked perfectly. This was a pre-show meal for us so we didn't stay for a desert but I'm sure that would've been fantastic as well. I have eaten here before, and brought clients, but not for a few years as I'm not based in Birmingham nowadays, I was there for a little nervous that it might not be as good as I remembered and I wanted to give my son a treat. The experience surpassed all expectations and started off a smashing night. Thank you Mal Maison. See you again.

Really enjoyed afternoon tea at Malmaison. When we arrived, we weren't given a very good table, so requested a booth instead - and were allowed to move as soon as one was available. Food and tea came out a reasonable time - the mini sliders were incredible! Loved all the sweet treats too - a good size, so not too sickly or stodgy! The scones were also nice, although a shame one was plain and one was fruit. Upgraded to the cocktail tea, which is a decent price, considering the price of the cocktails on the menu. Unfortunately, they took a while to come to the table and one of them was not one ordered. Luckily, another waiter (and then the manager) was very helpful in rectifying this only problem. Would go back, maybe not for tea, but lunch/dinner.

Arrived half a hour early so was asked to wait in the bar area which was perfectly fine however after 40 mins we had to ask about the delay. The staff did not know what was going on and the host apologised stating she became busy with other customers. After a rush of staff getting a table ready we were seated within 10 mins. Waiter was very friendly and pleasant. Restaurant very dark, lots of brown. Fine for the evening but lacking any nice features for afternoon tea. Mal Afternoon tea savouries were 2 wraps each, salmon and chicken plus a mini beef burger, very tasty. Mini raspberry smoothie perfect with the savouries. Highlight of the afternoon tea was the scones, best I've tasted, fresh and buttery. Mango dessert was very fresh with gorgeous Mango pieces, amaretto trifle also very nice if you like fruity deserts. Didn't enjoy the small pieces of chocolate brownie cake or the other coconut tasting cake so the fact that they were small didn't matter! Top up of drinks were included in the price, after the Waiter enquired as to further drinks he was not seen again so I expect he went off shift. No further staff came to us so we didn't get to order further drinks and nor was our table cleared so my friends and I sat for the rest of the time talking over the food stands. Eventually we gave up so we totalled our bill and put cash on the table and got up to leave. This instantly got the attention of a Waiter who came and took our money. I checked in at the till before leaving to be told there was a further £7 table service charge to pay...not impressive!

The service was great, really attentive
The salted caramel brownie was particularly gorgeous but the scone and lemon cake was very disappointing - it did not taste fresh, you could tell it had been there for a while as it had started to go hard!

The material the chairs were made of at our table was stained! So first impression was not good. First course of broth was excellent. Main course was just about warm and they had run out of our choice of sweet (pear tart tare) which again doesn't leave a good impression for a large restaurant!!
