A hidden gem in the City of London. There is a relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, fantastic food and, when you can't think it will get any better, an excellent live jazz duo start playing.

The best thing about this restaurant is its authenticity and attractiveness. The service is not always as attentive as it should be. Best starter for me is soup de poisson. It has a competitive neighbour at the Bleeding Heart which is a better French restaurant.

Lovely French restaurant/bistro; I went for dinner with my wife. We were met at the door, greeted, coats taken and then shown to our table. We ordered sherries as aperitifs and were somewhat surprised that the waitress had never heard of it. After a bried description she offered us a Tio Pepe, which was served on ice with an offer of tonic water(!). I'll call this a quirk rather than a fault. I had the sea bream from the daily specials and my wife had the vegetarian option from the menu, which were both absolutely delicious. Pleasant ambience, prompt service (although it was quiet, so this could might be different at busy times) and excellent food.

I really wanted to like this restaurant and its clear people do, so perhaps i caught an off day. It looks great. I love the location and its pretty faultless in appearance. Food was ok...... they over cooked the cote de boeuf but still served it (fair enough, as we still ate it) but you cant claim to not know it was overcooked, as its served in slices... the rest was ok, without being great. The mirabelle tart was just odd looking.
The service was pretty odd, rather cold at times and generally a bit disorganised.... clueless was a word used.
Anyway try it, I will go back once more at some stage but i eat a lot in that area and itsbup against some firm competition, esp in the cote de boeuf area.

Great ambience as ever. Polite attentive service Some very good dishes Black pudding and poached egg and the cottage pie in particular. The black pudding was just on the crumbly side and did need seasoning. All in all a very relaxed and enjoyable experience

Positives - good ambiance, friendly staff, knowledgeable about the menu ingredients, reassuringly short menu, superb fish soup, no pressure on wanting the table back.
Negatives - not so knowledgeable about the drinks menu. No noilly prat (Really? How more French could I ask for?), confusion when I asked if they had any Pedro Ximénez with desert, lastly we had to tell about four different waiters that we preferred to top up our own wine glasses before the message was understood.

Cafe du Marche was my favourite London restaurant but I shall not be returning. There were six in our party. All had eaten there in the past and loved it but on this occasion none of us had a satisfactory meal. Apart from the delicious bread, the food was extremely disappointing, lacking taste and finesse. The beetroot and gravadlax starter consisted of thick slices of plain boiled beetroot served with a minuscule amount of salmon and accompanied with a horseradish and creme fraiche dressing which contained so much grated strong horseradish that it was inedible. The portion of chicken in the plat du jour was so small as to be laughable. We decided that the duck croustade was probably made from yesterday's left overs. It was coarse and unappetising. The tarte du jour on the dessert menu was delicious but (in contrast to the chicken) it was too large. The service was extremely poor. The waiters (male and female) were leaning across us to serve those on the other side of the table. They brought us vegetables we hadn't ordered and left them for several minutes before collecting them up and delivering them to the correct table. They then presented us with someone else's bill. There was no evidence of overall management - the food and the service felt like an amateur production. This was not a happy experience.
