A coffee shop hideaway in the heart of the bustling York metropolis, Kafeneion revives weary wayfarers with refined coffee blends and light, nutritious food. Laidback lunches and lazy afternoon teas can be enjoyed in Kafeneion’s contemporary red and white setting, decorated with lively modern art pieces.

With hints of Middle Eastern influence, the Kafeneion menu offers a range of light lunch bites, with toasted paninis, bagels and focaccia featuring alongside freshly-prepared salads like salmon nicoise and Greek feta ‘horiatiki’. There’s a selection of meze, which feature alongside sharing platters, quiches and jacket potatoes.

Indulge in afternoon tea at the Kafeneion café in York, a selection of delicate sandwiches, freshly-baked fruit scones, and mini cakes or chocolate truffles, served with a pot of tea or coffee. Coffee beans come from Brazil and the high plains of Central America, for a rich, exotic flavour.

Kafeneion is on Goodramgate, a 5-minute walk from Guildhall and the York Shambles.

Dining upstairs in stale room tucked away from main restaurant, no decor no atmosphere. Sandwiches consisted of 2 ham and tomato, 2 salmon and a lot of cream cheese, 2 ham and pickle, 2 tuna and cucumber ( these where very small and not particularly well made). 2 scones and 2 pieces of Victoria sponge cake. Not as described on web page at time of booking. Definitely not worth £25 for two.

Arrived and greeted by happy, friendly and welcoming staff. Table beautifully laid out with China and flowers!! The whole setting was very relaxing and despite there being other people in the restaurant it felt very intimate.

There was a wide choice of tea so we had Yorkshire tea which was served in a beautiful China tea pot! Choice of ham & tomato, smoked salmon and cream cheese or Wensleydale cheese with red onion marmalade....we asked for a selection and staff happily obliged. Scones were tasty and with real clotted cream ( not whipped as some restaurants give you) finally the cakes!! There was a lemon curd with raspberry ( that came home with us) and I can say it's beautifully tangy! Chocolate brownie was demolished as was the peanut stack!!!

The cake that was left was boxed up for us without us asking and we all left feeling satisfied and happy!! A great way to end a birthday!!
