Great ambience, busy, but not noisy. Very good set lunch menu, and excellent Martinis made for a very enjoyable time.

A hidden gem surrounded by the shops and theatres of Covent Garden, Joe Allen is a highly regarded restaurant serving a selection of American and European specialities.

Ideally located for a pre-theatre meal or for dinner after the show, Joe Allen is quietly tucked away on Exeter Street just a five-minute walk away from Covent Garden underground station. Nearby theatres include The Lyceum, Novello Theatre and Duchess Theatre, as well as the Fortune Theatre and Theatre Royal. Joe Allen is also a great destination for a special brunch, lunch or dinner when shopping or staying in one of the hotels around Covent Garden and on the Strand.

Opened in 1977 as a stylish London dining venue for theatre-goers, artists, journalists and performers alike, Joe Allen has a relaxed, casual feel throughout. Today the healthy cuisine and friendly atmosphere attract an eclectic clientele of the West End's young and trendy crowd, romantic couples and families.

    Good restaurant, food was mediocre

Disappointing from beginning to end. Although we had a reservation and the restaurant wasn't busy, we were shown to what looked like the worst table in the restaurant (table 60). Managed to get moved to a better table. Although the waiters were pleasant, it was very muddled. Food orders missed off then 2 replacements being brought at the same time. Was expected to eat the mixed grill from a tiny plate so had to get that changed. The house red looked like it had come out of a soda siphon. A chap kept bashing the back of my sons chair every time he walked with his plastic crate ( of laundry I think) from the restaurant to the kitchen. The steak on the mixed grill was over done, one of the halves of chicken was under done. The cannoli were woeful. Industrially made pecan pie not much better.
Annoyed to see that service charge was automatically added to the bill. Is this because you know the service is so bad that no one would ever leave a tip otherwise?
A real shame, used to love going to Joe Allen a lot a few years ago when I worked in town so was excited to take my wife and son for a bit of a post theatre treat.
Something had definitely gone wrong in the last few years.
    Very disappointed.

Great restaurant but a better system of air conditioning would represent a big improve.

Really nice setting, friendly and efficient service despite being busy and the offer we had been atracted to was a proper printed menu option, presented with the main menu and not as an afterthought as we've had at other places who seem to frown at you when you come in for the offer

The starter was a disaster, the bread base was stale when i showed it to the manager they agreed and took it off the bill, the main course was passable but you could have got better going to Waitrose and buying a ready meal my wife's food was okay but nothing like the quality we used to get .

I was after a American theme restaurant and I found this one I booked it up for birthday I couldn't be more pleased it was on a side street down some stairs I ordered a beer on tap the only problem was they don't do pint glasses just two pint jugs or half pint glasses the beer was very nice . For my meal I started with crispy calamari with chilli Mayo it was chispy and hot, for main I had a rib eye steak and fries with corn on the cob and coleslaw as sides with peppercorn sauce ,this was cooked perfect . For my sweet I had pecan pie and cream and this Finnished my meal off perfect, all I can say was the food was great and the service was on par with the meal , the next time I am in London I will be going they again
