A hidden gem surrounded by the shops and theatres of Covent Garden, Joe Allen is a highly regarded restaurant serving a selection of American and European specialities.

Ideally located for a pre-theatre meal or for dinner after the show, Joe Allen is quietly tucked away on Exeter Street just a five-minute walk away from Covent Garden underground station. Nearby theatres include The Lyceum, Novello Theatre and Duchess Theatre, as well as the Fortune Theatre and Theatre Royal. Joe Allen is also a great destination for a special brunch, lunch or dinner when shopping or staying in one of the hotels around Covent Garden and on the Strand.

Opened in 1977 as a stylish London dining venue for theatre-goers, artists, journalists and performers alike, Joe Allen has a relaxed, casual feel throughout. Today the healthy cuisine and friendly atmosphere attract an eclectic clientele of the West End's young and trendy crowd, romantic couples and families.

Good atmosphere. Bar steak and chilli excellent.Side of mushrooms v tasty but small. Love live piano. Tables well spaced compared to some other places. Service can be a little scatty, not sure who is doing what. However we were not hurried and food was served fresh and hot. Stepping through the velvet curtains feels like stepping into a haven. We are most upset at thought of de Niro turfing them out. Nowhere is perfect and we love it here.

Immediately loved Joe Allen- enter from an unassuming street, down some steps ,part the curtains and into a wonderful basement restaurant. Great relaxed atmosphere, excellent service and a varied menu with some Amercian classics including a separate Green menu for Vegetarians (had the best Veggie Burger I've ever had). Lovely touch with the birthday icecream and pianist playing Happy Birthday. Thank you, we will be back.

Fantastic! The atmosphere was cosy and comfortable. There was a large variety of food for a reasonable price. The steak and chips was very well prepared and extremely tasty.

Nice food and venue. Enjoyed visit. Staff could be trained up to be more personable and attentive- there are just functional.

Lovely meal at Joe Allen's. Good menu and my steak was amazing. We also ordered cocktails and although some of them were a bit small they all tasted good. The only down side was we were sitting near an air con unit and although the staff were very helpful when we asked them to turn it down, it still felt cold

The original "American style" restaurant in London, it has been in Covent Garden almost since it stopped being a market. The basement location gives it a great atmosphere. With the New York theatre posters everywhere it feels like an authentic experience rather than a pastiche. With great food, good friendly service and good value of this part of London what's not to like? This place is an old friend and long may it continue.
