A hidden gem surrounded by the shops and theatres of Covent Garden, Joe Allen is a highly regarded restaurant serving a selection of American and European specialities.

Ideally located for a pre-theatre meal or for dinner after the show, Joe Allen is quietly tucked away on Exeter Street just a five-minute walk away from Covent Garden underground station. Nearby theatres include The Lyceum, Novello Theatre and Duchess Theatre, as well as the Fortune Theatre and Theatre Royal. Joe Allen is also a great destination for a special brunch, lunch or dinner when shopping or staying in one of the hotels around Covent Garden and on the Strand.

Opened in 1977 as a stylish London dining venue for theatre-goers, artists, journalists and performers alike, Joe Allen has a relaxed, casual feel throughout. Today the healthy cuisine and friendly atmosphere attract an eclectic clientele of the West End's young and trendy crowd, romantic couples and families.

The lunch was excellent. Staff were attentive and always service with a smile. The steak was fantastic and my friend raved about the fishcake.

I had visited the restaurant during the week with some friends (who had previously been and recommended we visit). I was so impressed I booked a table for my husband and myself on the Saturday night. Wasn't disappointed - food was excellent. I had the sea bass which was delicious. Service was great from start to finish - staff very attentive and courteous. They bought everything we asked for including water - didn't hassle us while we were eating apart from asking if everything was okay.
Loved the atmosphere in the restaurant. On the Tuesday we had sat in the larger area, but I asked for a table in the smaller section so that we could hear the pianist.
The only negative comment I would have is that the lady pianist on Tuesday played actual tunes which was really good, and on Saturday the gentleman pianist seemed to be playing just background music which was a shame.
Overall thought a great place and would certainly visit again - but would recommend booking in advance.

Joe Allan's looks nothing from the street - in fact it's just a door. But you go in, down some steps, into the restaurant and you're in and could easily be in New York. Ambience is super. Table not too tightly packed in, gentle hum of conversation, nothing too loud. Attended to very quickly. Food arrived promptly, tasted lovely. All the food was fine in fact as were the drinks. Typical New York diner style but with that extra something., Useful for the theatre goer. We were there at 5.30pm on a Sat afternoon and the place was pretty busy so booking is advisable.

Very tasty food. Set Menu a bit limited.

We nearly enjoyed our early evening visit. The service was attentive and good. Our main courses were steaks so nothing much to go wrong. However, my starter was a lack lustre and expensive £8.50 Crab and Avocado Mousse. It was fairly tasteless and sitting in the middle of a very liquid sauce accompanied by two very tiny pieces of toast. - there must be a bread shortage in Covent Garden. Overall, our bill totalled £102.00 including a bottle of wine but without coffee or dessert
In conclusion ... we arrived about 5.30pm but the restaurant felt stuffy and warm. Sadly, no air conditioning evident ...
I visted Joe Allen's many years ago when it first opened but I think it needs to recapture the original sparkle it once had!
