The afternoon tea was great with a good range of sandwiches and cakes and they could cater for my wife who is vegetarian. Good venue

The Grand is very grand and beautiful - the bar area is lovely.

Hudson's dining room was more functional. The staff were officious. One of them had clearly taken a smoking break and returned smelling of fags.

The maitre d' called us all darling. We heard staff talking about their lives out of work. A bit unprofessional.

The afternoon tea itself was lovely.

It was a nice experience in a special place. Slightly tainted by the staff.

Superb afternoon tea. Couldn't fault it apart from one small thing. Surprising collection of savouries. Particularly liked the sausage roll slices. The sweetness of the sultanas and apples surprised you. It went really well with the pork. Liked the rye bread, different from ordinary bread. Tasty smoked salmon. Scones-dainty, as befits an afternoon tea, served with delicious clotted cream and fruity jams. The lemon curd jam was particularly fruity. Cheesecake-the fruit topping was to die for. The moist Gingerbread enhanced by the spot of icing was lovely, but would have preferred more ginger. Interesting red, dome on the cupcake but took that home for the children. The teas- the Grand and breakfast tea where fine, not too strong. Liked the opportunity to try different varieties. The staff where superb: --- a real credit to the Hotel. The silver teapots made it feel special, which indeed it was for me and my daughter. The room was quiet and relaxing and the music not too loud. Tables spaced adequately apart for privacy.
One small thing. Please serve the coffee in coffee cups and not teacups.
But a wonderful, special, occasion. Well done to everyone.

The staff at the Grand are superb to the extent that as well as being professional and efficient they are genuinely pleased to see us every time we go. An example is that when they see our name on a booking they set aside couple of bottles of ale unrefrigerated as it should be. Sadly this time there was not a single bottle of ale on the premises, only lager. For that entirely unnecessary oversight I am happy to embarrass them here rather than knock off a star from what was otherwise a completely five-star dining experience, as usual.

The menu has unusual features, like no side dishes at all, and some of the ingredients are unusual (eg. wild or foraged) but what is presented on the plate is delightful, novel and well worth it.

And we're looking forward to our next visit.

As always, what a lovely relaxing afternoon. Food was beautiful and very filling. Chose to sit in one of the small bar rooms, cozy and quiet. So relaxed when we left. Thoroughly enjoyed the new food,it was nice not to have sandwiches as the savoury food.
