We've previously had some great dinners and lunches at Hotel Du vin, and choose to eat here to celebrate my husbands birthday. I booked online for a the specific Chateaubriand offer, and detailed that we were there as a special occasion. When we arrived no-one seemed to know any of this detail. No one spoke to us about the quality of the meal we were about to enjoy, or why they had specifically paired a particular wine with the beef? In short the staff were pleasant but lacked any luster. the table was sticky and everything needed a gentle tug to move it around it around.

The starter was pleasant enough, but nothing special, and the knives which were provided to us for the main course were blunt. Blunt to the point that a portion of my husband's meal shot off the plate as he tried to cut through the steak. Only after i had mentioned the word "birthday" in several conversations whilst the staff were at our table, eventually as we left to go the bar they wished my husband a very quick happy birthday (more of an after thought).

The bar in the hotel was very quiet and had no atmosphere. The barman was completed flustered with the two people he already had sat in there, and lacked a lot of things he might actually need in his bar. We asked to see the cigars (they were in a different room), (they were all dry despite being in the humidor), we asked for a cigar cutter (apparently they had all been stolen), so the barman had to take it away to get someone to use a sharp knife.. he wasn't allowed to have one in the bar.? We took our drinks and went to the outdoor snug, dirty ashtrays adorned the tables, no fire had been lit, and although the snug had plenty of candles none of them had been lit. Not a very appealing place. It lacked any form of cosines that the lovely hut was crying out for.

in our opinion we will not be returning and shall not be recommending it to anyone. it is such a shame that what used to be the jewell of Winchester has fallen steeply downhill.

Altogether a really good experience, the waiting stuff were attentive and helpful and the food v good, much better than our last visit several years ago.
Lovely light and tasty Christmas pud. We will go back.

Lovely building, serene atmosphere and attentive staff (without being overly so). 2 of our party ate a la carte and 2 from the set menu and all agreed the food was delicious.

Lovely evening. The food was fabulous and the service good. The the restaurant was full but had a good atmosphere. Only problem we had was that no one wanted to take our money! It took a very long time to locate someone to do so.

The days when I thought HdV is the best place in Winchester are Sadly long gone. The service was poor, the barman was poor, no sommelier to be seen, the food average. The host lady was the only one actually working she was amazing. It only saddens me because the HdV winchester has been my go to place for the past 15 years and boy has it changed.

We all enjoyed our luncheon. The Menu was varied and the service was very good. The food was beautifully prepared and presented. As a Birthday treat it came up to expectations.

The Bar area was cold (the external temperature was only 8C) and the fire remained unlit until we complained how cold it was. The length of time between sitting in the bar and being asked foe our drinks order was lengthy and it took even longer to get the flutes for the champagne that was ordered. We were presented with the A La Carte menu from which we made our selection. The fact that I had booked a 'special deal' of a cocktail plus two course lunch was completely ignored and yet the reception area were aware of the booking! as we had to provide details on arrival. It begged the question as to why bother to book!

I raised the issue of the booking when I was about to leave with the Receptionist and, I assume , the House Manager but I fear the matter fell on deaf ears. I have tried to call the Hotel to discuss the matter but the only number advertise is for a recorded message relating to a booking for the restaurant.

As I said in my introduction the food and service for lunch was very good and my family enjoyed themselves but that is no substitute to the frustration experienced

The service and food were exceptional. From the entrance to the bar to the restaurant the staff really excelled themselves. As for the chocolate tart that was just to die for – well done.

The two course meal plus cocktail was excellent value and lovely food. The menu had great options and we had a most enjoyable outing. Staff, food, ambiance were all excellent, we would definitely go again.
