Enjoying an idyllic village location, The Dining Room at Deans Place Hotel, Alfriston holds 2 AA Rosettes for its fine British dining. In 4 acres of tranquil grounds on the South Downs, the delightful terrace offers al fresco dining overlooking Victorian gardens, while a real log fire warms the cosy bar in winter.

The Dining Room's monthly-changing menu features a wealth of meat, game and fish, from pan-fried guinea fowl and mushroom perogi to slow roast pork belly. Wood pigeon and rabbit are among the decadent starters, with crème brulee and iced apple parfait for dessert.

14th-century Deans Place offers a wide range of wines and cocktails, and full vegetarian and children’s menus. Kentish Hog sausages and braised Sussex beef are available from the bar, along with a range of fresh sandwiches and melts. The midweek lunch is served in the beautiful Bar & Terrace, with views across the croquet lawn.

Using the finest local produce, The Dining Room's traditional Sunday lunches are a weekend treat. The Dining Room in Alfriston is around 12 minutes’ drive from Polegate, or 10 minutes from Seaford.

Excellent afternoon tea. Full tea was a fraction under £20 and as many extra sandwiches and scones as you like could be ordered at no extra cost.

I had the chicken breast the so-called Eton mess. The breast was tender fragrant very nice however, it was a minimum amount of gravy to go with the vegetables. Roast potatoes looked so they were overdone and were not crisp. The Eton mess was a concoction that was nothing like the Eton mess I have had many times elsewhere. As far as I could see it was a small piece of meringue like a biscuit and I'm not sure if there was even a raspberry there. The glass of Malbec was very pleasant.

We had the full afternoon cream tea with a choice of English teas finger sandwiches and a choice of very nice cakes the service was excellent and as the weather was good we were able to have it out side on the patio with lovely views of the gardens ??

A lovely hotel in a peaceful location. We booked afternoon tea which arrived promptly, however we had to ask for a cup of tea and coffee as they had forgetten to serve it! Scones appeared to be freshly baked and were warmed up prior to serving.

We actually had Afternoon Tea at The Deans Place Hotel in Alfriston, which is served in the lounge area where there was a roaring fire and great views over the garden, although it was a grey, damp day. The sandwiches and cakes, including scones with proper clotted cream and jam, were all delicious, and there was a choice of tea which was refreshed as required. It was a lovely way to spend a winter's afternoon.

A beautiful setting, very cosy, warm and comfortable. The tea was good with sandwiches, fruit cake, scones, cream cakes and small pastries. The scones were served with cream and jam but no butter. A more balanced tea would have included sponge cake of some description rather than cakes with more cream. We had quite a wait between the tea (drink) arriving and the food. After that, no-one came to check that all was OK or to ask if we needed anything. They did provide more hot water and a fresh pot of tea but I had to go and ask. Costly at £15 per head so I was glad to have gone when there was an offer of 25% off.
