Nestled on the fringes of Dartmoor National Park, the Great Western at Bovey Castle epitomises tranquillity with its rural setting. Guests can enjoy classic British food in a relaxed dining room that recalls the allure of the restaurant’s Art Deco origins.

The Great Western menu features locally produced, exceptional food, all of which is beautifully presented. Scallops with an emulsion of cockles, clams and oyster are a spectacular starter while the roast suckling pig with confit turnip and spiced quince makes for a sumptuous main course. The impressive wine list at Bovey Castle near Newton Abbot is filled with meticulously sourced bottles.

A delectable array of desserts includes warm banana soufflé with corn ice cream and malt toffee sauce, and a creative chocolate tree stump with lime and cardamom.

Guests can pre-arrange transport to this fine dining restaurant in Devon with the hotel. Newton Abbot Train Station is a 40-minute drive from Bovey Castle.

Excellent afternoon tea with a lovely selection of sandwiches and cakes. There were fantastic views across Dartmoor from our window side seats

We greatly enjoyed our afternoon tea. We had a lovely table near the window in the bar where the butterfly wall display was superb. Service was good, calm and helpful without being intrusive. As for the tea it was really delicious and very attractive. The cakes were scrumptious and the scones very fresh and good. My only criticism was that the sandwiches were a little dry. This was a shame as everything else was very good indeed.

Met outside by member of staff, in britches, who was not particularly welcoming. A lot of staff in dining room, but service not the best. Overall, good but not wow.

Had a wonderful afternoon tea here with a fantastic choice of sandwiches, pastries and cakes. The staff were fantastic and very attentive apart from one male waiter who kept walking through looking at us looking at his watch and then tutting which spoilt an otherwise very enjoyable afternoon.

The setting and service in The Great Western was excellent. However, the food was not so good, we had the Sunday Roast Beef. My daughter and I couldn't eat it as it was cold. I suspect the roast potatoes had been frozen and re-heated, the beef was very chewy and the vegetables parsnip and carrots again frozen, looked sorry for themselves.. It all tasted pretty AWFUL!! Had it not been my husbands birthday I would have sent the food back to the kitchen.

Afternoon tea was delicious. It was served in a beautiful sitting room with an open fire at a table overlooking the grounds. The food was delicious and the staff were friendly and efficient.
