A stunningly converted Grade-II listed building that was England's first purpose-built gym, German Gymnasium Grand Café is a focal point in King's Cross. Along with chic brasserie dining, there are premium cocktails, afternoon teas, and vast heated terraces.

The Mittel-European German Gymnasium Grand Café menu caters for any time of day. For breakfast and brunch there is smoked salmon with scrambled eggs, freshly-squeezed juices and smoothies, while at lunch there are delicacies including beef broth with liver dumplings and shaved black truffles. Fresh oysters feature, along with caviar, traditional beef goulash, and excellent schnitzels.

Afternoon teas at German Gymnasium King's Cross feature German and Austrian varieties, including mini rolls filled with Black Forest ham, as well as sweet treats like apple strudel and frangipane tart. The wine, champagne and cocktail lists are extensive, as is the choice of speciality beers.

Mixing traditional elegance with stunning contemporary features, German Gymnasium Grand Café London is 4 minutes' walk from King's Cross St Pancras Rail Station.

Wonderful venue. Friendly service. We didn't think much of the food, it did not appear to have been prepared by someone who was familiar with German cooking. Ordered Wiesswurst; the sausage was OK, the accompaniments not . eg, cucumber salad was thickly sliced unpeeled cucumber - should have been thinly sliced peeled. Huge pretzel should have been bread. "Mustard" was some sweet grainy stuff, should have had a tang to offset the blandness of the sausage. The knife provided could not cut the skin of the sausage, in the end we had to pick it up and eat with our fingers.
Ant this was a dish that is simplicity itself, I hate to think what a more complex dish would have been like.

The staff made us feel very welcome and were attentive but not intrusive throughout our meal. I had the salmon and my partner had the salt marsh lamb and both were very enjoyable. We will definitely return to try other menu options.

Great restaurant! Food was excellent (small portions though) and very good service. The place is beautiful to enjoy inside or outside.

Afternoon tea experience was disappointing. The table we were allocated was far too small to accommodate two cake tiers and you could hardly see or talk to your dining partner. There was no automatic top up of fresh tea -we had to ask for a fresh pot. The waitress did not really know what the different cakes were she just read out the menu, I could have done that too! There was no sense of ceremony as I expect with afternoon tea. The whole experience was very ordinary.

Cosy, faux-Bavarian atmosphere. Good choice of drinks (they even have Rothaus Pils). Excellent service. Don't think haute cuisine, but the classical German meal choices are nice and authentic.
