Superb food. My favourite restaurant in Cardiff.

Using fish caught off British waters, Fish at 85 in Cardiff serves fresh produce, caught daily, and prepared to each diner’s preference. On the site of a working fishmongers, the restaurant expert knowledge goes into every meal.
Adapting to the availability of produce, the Fish at 85 menu showcases fresh, carefully sourced ingredients. Matching fresh fish with exciting flavours, expect the likes of scallops with asparagus and dry sherry, monkfish with green chili and spinach, or build your own dish by choosing the fish, cooking method, accompaniments and sauce. The classics aren’t neglected however, with roast cod and potatoes served with the added panache you’d expect from an expert fishmongers.
Rich desserts complete the menu, with a lemon posset and a hot plum pudding with custard amongst the indulgent options. Simple but charming, wooden-panelled walls and black tiled flooring lend the restaurant a rustic yet contemporary feel.
In the Pontcanna area of the city, Fish at 85 is a 7-minute drive from Cardiff Central Train Station.

Don't be put off by the exterior or the simple rustic/industrial décor this is a serious fish restaurant and the set lunch, which we had, is incredibly good value for money. Starters of mussels, crayfish salad and smoked haddock topped with melted cheese were all good. Garnishes were simple, but fresh. Portion sizes were generous. After mains of grilled sea bass with fresh asparagus, peas and broad beans for the girls and a whole lemon sole for me we were too full for desserts. There are no meat or pastas , just fish, salads and vegetables. Yum!
Only minus was the friendly, but difficult to understand, front of house service.
We shall return on our next visit to Cardiff

Mixed bag of comments from us.
Service was a bit hit and mix
Nice front of house staff but not really on the ball.
Scallops were delicious. Devilled whitebait not "devilled"! Mussels fantastic.
Monkfish soulvaki very tasty, cod loin excellent.
Puds good it would have been nice for my husband to have had his coffee when we were having or puds rather than before.
Appreciated the effort with my birthday pudding and the card. Nice touch.
Marks out of 10 overall 6/7.

Disappointed: too much pepper, capers on the fish. It spoiled all the flavor. Molds too cooked, no container large enough for waste. Good service. Entry of scallops excellent, perfect cooking. Excessive price in relation to the quality of the food.

The food was superb, the scallops to start were cooked to perfection, the lemon sole was just amazing and the pan fried seabass with sauce vierge was a taste sensation. A fantastic selection of fish and sauces. If you have not been before you must give it a try. The staff were lovely and the service was spot on.

The restaurant is situated in the lively part of Pontcanna which makes it in general a bit different experience for tourists like us (we weren't supposed to see Pontcanna at all and that would have been a pity). Fish at 85 is positioned quite expectedly as a seafood restaurant and God does their chef know what to do with prawns, scallops, lemon sole and mackerel! This was not worse than cuisine in some posh restaurants in world capital cities but for a reasonable (if not to say ridiculously small) price. The restaurant is small and very smartly decorated with just a little bit of sea-themed items. We were also very impressed by the toilet - clean, stylish and very spacious :)
Will definitely try this place again should I ever be in Cardiff.

Went for a dinner for my husband's birthday. The place had very nice and cosy atmosphere and the staff was helpful. The meals were really delicious. It is not cheap but you get a fresh fish prepared perfectly. A heaven for a fish lover!
