We booked for 3.00 pm on Sunday afternoon, the last available booking. When we arrived and were seated most of the restaurant was empty, only two large family tables finishing their meals. The restaurant had obviously been busy and all the other tables had been cleared, with the exception of two, but not cleaned with some debris on the floor both on the tables and the surrounding area. So first impression was rather disappointing, only saved by the fact it is a nice, well appointed dining room, opening onto lovely gardens. The actual service and food however were very good.

I had booked on line and when we arrived there was a little confusion over the booking, fortunately I had printed off the confirmation and booking reference, so this was resolved. When booking, under the special requests I had advised that one of the party had an egg and nut allergy (quite severe, 9 year old), and I suggested some simple sandwich fillings for her, and reiterated this when we were shown to our table in the lounge as they seemed unaware of the request. The afternoon tea was brought for four people (booking was for five) and again I mentioned the egg and nut allergy. The waiter then went to speak to the chef, and some sandwiches were brought separately for my grandaughter. I have to say that the first waiter we had was very co-operative and helpful, as he resolved this with the minimum of fuss, and even brought her some crisps! There was a wedding party at the time in another part of the hotel and I think they were all rather stretched as when the first waiter went off duty things became a little slow. Other than this slight criticism, the surroundings were lovely and the food was good.
