The Westelijk Handelsterrein (Western Trading Estate) oozes the old Rotterdam atmosphere, the Rotterdam of the shipping days. The Westelijk Handelsterrein was awarded national monument status in April of this year. The complex dates back to 1894 and was designed by architect T.L. Kanters. The building is home to De Belastingdienst (Inland Revenue). Everything in this restaurant has some sort of a connection to the Inland Revenue. For example, the starters, main courses and desserts are referred to as preliminary, main and after taxes. The menu has a few more of these humorous references to the Inland Revenue. For example, the salad with Dutch prawns, smoked salmon and grilled tuna is referred to as the Viskus. De Belastingdienst has an extensive menu with an international character.
