Due to unforeseen circumstances Carom Bar and Restaurant ( & Floridita) will be closed for business until further notice. Please check the website for further details. Named after an exotic spice, Carom in Soho is a vibrant blend of classic and contemporary Indian dining. Flavoursome dishes blended with aromatic spices sit alongside colourful cocktails, Indian wines and whisky, with diners able to play the Indian tabletop game of Carom.

The Carom menu specialises in casual dining, serving an eclectic range of sharing dishes. Diners can choose from the huge range of delicacies on offer, building up a meal to suit their exact tastes. Highlights from the menu include fresh seafood, like chilli fried squid ‘Mirch Makeli’ with coriander dip, and vegetarian options such as vegetable dumpling, cashew nuts and caramelised onion sauce. Tandoori dishes at Carom London are not over-spiced, and are offered with cooling yoghurt marinades.

Unlike so many Indian restaurants, Carom Soho serves Indian wines and whiskies, and also mixes up cocktails using small-batch spirits.

Luxurious and bursting with chic Indian innovation, Carom restaurant is 8 minutes’ walk from Leicester Square Tube Station.

Booked for 7.30pm. They argued with me insisting it was 7.45pm until I showed them my booking confirmation. No apology. Then we got sat at a table underneath an air conditioner. We asked to move table. Nothing. Asked someone else. Nothing. Asked someone else. Nothing. Asked AGAIN. Then it was too late because there were no other tables available. Poor service and mediocre overpriced food.

Initial impressions were very positive - a stylish and clean lounge feel with friendly front of house staff and free cloakroom facilities. The lady who greeted us did a fantastic job; sat us promptly and took our drinks order. Sadly things took a slight downwards turn when after about 10 minutes I had to ask if we could place our food order. The starters were met with approval, mine in particular I thought delightful. Mains were slightly less spectacular but still decent. I had the lamb dalcha curry and it wasn't as robust as I would have expected and although it was marked as spicy on the menu it wasn't nearly as fiery as the lamb shami starter, which was not.

Unfortunately one of the Americans with whom I was dining had difficulty explaining to the waiter that took our payment that the machine should not simply take payment in dollars if she did not want it to. The receipt stated that she had been offered a choice but no such choice was given. Even more unfortunate is that the matter could not be resolved; there was no offer to get a senior staff member to come and discuss it with us. The same waiter also insisted on counting the receipts/cash at our table (particularly insulting as I am an accountant!); I would not mind had he taken them away and counted them and had to come back with a discrepancy, mistakes happen.

TL:DR - the front of house is excellent, the food is ok to great, the service is somewhat lacking. I would go back and give it another go.

On arrival we were given the wrong menu and staff seemed very confused as to what the London Restaurant Festival was. After getting the correct menu (15 minutes after our last party member had sat down) we ordered and had to remind them of the additional glass of wine when only 2 came out. 2 out of 3 starters were incorrect despite the waiter having read our order back to us. We stuck with the incorrect starters, Tawa macchi, grilled mackerel fillet, herb bread, and they were really nice, unexpected but I'm glad for this mistake.

Papadums were nice and plenty between the three of us, could have done with a little more chutney, but that is personal preference.

Main courses arrived and were ok, nothing special , my Lamb dalcha curry, diced lamb leg, lentil, basmati rice whilst nice would not be something i went back for.

Unfortunately we were too full for dessert, however, i feel that even had we wanted one, the 2 hour table time limit would have passed and there could well have been an interesting conversation to be had.

Whilst i will give everything another go, it will be some time before I return to Carom.
