Weaving together old-school charm and trendy design, the Canteen Spitalfields in central London boasts fresh British food in an inviting glass structure, with floor-to-ceiling windows.

Keeping to time-honoured traditions, the Canteen menu offers a range of wholesome, no-nonsense classics. Daily pies and seasonal sausages are on offer, as well as favourites like macaroni cheese or battered fish and chips. Puddings are similarly indulgent and old school, with offerings like apple pie and custard, or gingerbread with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.

The popular bar at Canteen – Spitalfields offers a meticulously-compiled wine list, innovative Cockney-themed cocktails and locally-brewed ciders and beers. Baked in-house, the cakes in the afternoon tea are augmented by homely sandwiches, hand-roasted coffees and rare teas.

Nestled amongst the business and liveliness of Bishopsgate, the Canteen – Spitalfields is just a 7-minute walk from Aldgate East Train Station.

Very disappointing. We took some foreign visitors to the restaurant to provide them with a positive experience of England but they probably went away with a bad experience of Canteen! The restaurant was very cold and we were told the heating was not working. The waitress who served us had an inadequate command of English and also did not understand the menu, several times categorically telling us that "greens" was salad even though we said we thought it would be cooked veg. Also, she got the drinks order wrong and also the dessert order. She was not helpful generally. The toilets were not good and the gents had a ladies sanitary bin in it. The food was just about ok in that it was edible (but my husband has indigestion during the night) but not good value. The restaurant had only a few diners and so the atmosphere was not very inviting.

My two nieces (aged 13 and 9) and I enjoyed a fabulous afternoon tea at The Canteen. It's a bright and airy venue and we were served very generous sized sandwiches (Ham Salad, Egg Mayonnaise and Smoked Salmon with Cream Cheese), Scones and Cake; all washed down with individual pots of tea - delicious. The staff were welcoming and friendly; all in all it was good value for money and an enjoyable afternoon.

Food very good very clean and neat . Not overpriced and service was good until time to pay the bill. Left card on bill on table no one came back to swipe card in the end had to call someone over to do it. So a 9 out of 10.

I booked a table for lunch because it is so close to Christmas.
Initially it was quite quiet but it got busier and the staff did not seem clear about what they were doing, so there were long delays for everything.
We ordered a main course and a dessert and we were going to have coffee but I had to get back to work so we decided against it.
The food and wine was good.
The lady on the front desk recognised that we had waited a ling time for our food and deducted the service charge without even us asking and apologised for the delays, so we added it back on in recognition of her service.
Probably would be a better experience outside of the Christmas period.

We had a very nice dinner with drinks. I arrived very early and was able to go to the table well ahead of time and have a drink while waiting for my friend. Plain English food well prepared with massive portions. We both ordered breast of chicken with all the trimmings but each received half a chicken! I couldn't finish mine. We would both go again. Service was fine and it is good that there are no stairs to the loos.

We were sat on the side of the main restaurant and therefore spent the meal with a number of people queuing to get in stood right next to our table (as well as getting cold from the door opening and closing constantly). Unfortunately due to our location we seemed to have got forgotten about, having to wait 20 minutes before being asked what we want to drink. Small thing but we had to as what the pie/any specials were rather than being directed. Food was good and arrived quickly after ordering. Was disappointed to find a £16 service charge on the bill that was no optional.

A nice place to have brunch. friendly and efficient staff. Strange that the almond croissants had run out by 11am.
Everyones breakfast looked tasty. My scrambled egg portion was minute!!
Overall though , our group of 6 had a nice meal.
