The food was excellent and the staff looked after us well.
The restaurant is tucked away at the back of the Royal Festival Hall. So you don't get the river views of the venues at the front. But that wasn't a priority for us

Trendy, yet with retro charm, the Canteen Royal Festival Hall showcases great British cuisine. Boasting this vintage food in a sleek setting, you can relax and refresh yourself in the well-heeled and iconic South Bank.

Keeping to time-honoured traditions, the Canteen menu offers a range of wholesome, no-nonsense classics. Daily pies and seasonal sausages are on offer, as well as favourites like macaroni cheese or battered fish and chips. Puddings are similarly indulgent and old school, with offerings like apple pie and custard, or gingerbread with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.

An ever-bustling bar at Canteen – Royal Festival Hall offers fine wines, inventive Cockney-themed cocktails and locally-brewed ciders and beers. Homemade cakes, hand-roasted coffees and rare teas populate the afternoon tea, indicative of all the fresh ingredients used at the restaurant.

Located by the riverside in the landmark Royal Festival Hall, the Canteen is perfectly placed to further explore central London, and is just a 3-minute walk from Waterloo Train Station.

Great service and food. The staff are attentive without being intrusive and the venue wheelchair accessible.

The atmosphere was excellent, the service was very good, the pie was good , oh but the cabbage was raw and so tough , I managed it , but what an effort, my husband had to leave his. You just couldn't chew it. I don't like my vegetables over cooked , this was just ridiculous.

It seemed like a nice place however our drinks order took a very long time on both times we ordered. The food wasn't as appetising as it looks on the menu. The polenta was bland and was not seasoned which makes such a difference if it seasoned well. The Congo chicken was just glorified cooked chicken as you woukd usually cook perhaps a breast. It had so many grissle bits that it ruined the meal. Not great chicken at all. The staff were nice and helpful but as a food lover, it's the quality of flavour and texture from the food that is most important to me so I unfortunately will not be going back.

Sunday roast was average. Meat gristly and cold. Veg consisted mainly of shredded greens that were undercooked. Service was brisk and good in our hurried circumstances. Apple drink was bland.

Met my brother & 2 friends for lunch on a saturday. Service was friendly & efficient. Menu whad a good range & everyone was happy with their choices. We weren't rushed out & the prices were very reasonable. Overall a good experience. My only complaint would be the slightly shanny decor. Our booth had a ripped seat cover & looking around a lot of the covers were a bit tatty.

Usual good food, but the waitress told us she had forgotten to tell them that our starters were starters, (although they were listed as thatbon the menu) and it was all ready at once so wouldn't it be ok to just serve all the food at once. I refused this. This is pretty basic stuff to get wrong. Also, once they have served the main course, the waiting staff seem to forget you are there. As they put a 12.5% service charge on the bill, they should deliver good service. Not the first time service has been poor here, but the location was what we needed and the food is good.

The Canteen is a convenient place to meet that offers good service and a reasonable menu selection. I opted for the roast chicken salad and my guest had the smoked haddock. The food is credible and reasonable value given the location. The Canteen is not going to set chins wagging in the halls of the offices of the Michelin guide, but it has solid food and a basic "Canteen" atmosphere which is good for catching up or meeting for business. With Waterloo only a few steps away or a short jaunt to Embankment tube, convenience means a lot.

Good British food, highly recommend the pie of the day, served by professional staff (lovely waiter Simone)

Arrived slightly early and told our table wasn't ready (lots of empty tables). 15 minutes after our reservation time still not seated but others arriving since had been. Confirmed we were forgotten about and then seated at a table that had been free the whole time.

Took ages for anyone to approach us to ask for orders or to help. When asked for details of what was gluten free. Server spoke to kitchen and was given two items (basically some plain asparagus and a salad) and told to go away by kitchen staff. I queried and he was able to get a little more detail but told to stop bothering them. Thus very little guidance about what I could eat. Order placed and took around 45 minutes to get any food. At this point we were close to leaving as is was an hour and a quarter after our booking time and we were going to the theatre.

    Food arrived:

Steak over cooked by two levels,
Salad was dripping with water as hadn't been dried properly,
Undercooked chicken which when pointed out to waiting staff was dismissed as fine (the middle was not cooked).

    Overall terrible!
