Absolutely superb service from our waiter Simone - he treated us like royalty, was warm, friendly, attentive and extremely professional.

Trendy, yet with retro charm, the Canteen Royal Festival Hall showcases great British cuisine. Boasting this vintage food in a sleek setting, you can relax and refresh yourself in the well-heeled and iconic South Bank.

Keeping to time-honoured traditions, the Canteen menu offers a range of wholesome, no-nonsense classics. Daily pies and seasonal sausages are on offer, as well as favourites like macaroni cheese or battered fish and chips. Puddings are similarly indulgent and old school, with offerings like apple pie and custard, or gingerbread with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.

An ever-bustling bar at Canteen – Royal Festival Hall offers fine wines, inventive Cockney-themed cocktails and locally-brewed ciders and beers. Homemade cakes, hand-roasted coffees and rare teas populate the afternoon tea, indicative of all the fresh ingredients used at the restaurant.

Located by the riverside in the landmark Royal Festival Hall, the Canteen is perfectly placed to further explore central London, and is just a 3-minute walk from Waterloo Train Station.

Excellent food, extremely friendly and pleasant staff and a very pleasant relaxed atmosphere. Not too noisy. Ideal location before theatre or concert on the South Bank.

Both my friend and I immediately noticed how much the prices had increased since we last visited and we have been 'regulars' here. We enjoyed the food but waiting staff very curt and we have decided not to return. We had paid the bill in cash, including £7 in tip, and waited for our change which did not come. It was only small coins but it is the principle, we would probably have left it on the table, but it should have been returned to us quickly. As I said previously we will not be returning.

The best feature of the restaurant is its location and the layout and the quality of the food is quite good. However, the service was chaotic. The waitress came to us to take the drink order when we were hardly settled at the table, so we kindly asked her to give us 5 minutes. She promptly came back and the drink order was taken. The drinks came promptly but no attempt was made to take our food order. We tried to get her attention a few times but in vain. After 40 minutes, we hailed the waitress who finally took our food order. She seemed to really struggle to take it though. By this time, the restaurant became increasingly busy. The mains came, but our starters had been forgotten. Eventually, they arrived, so we ate them after our mains! The waitress tried to clear our table even though one of us had not quite finished. He felt pressured to just let go of his half eaten salad, which is really not on considering how much they charge for it! Pudding came and another waitress took our paper menus from the table, covering me in crumbs without even a slight apology. After all these issues, we decided we would not pay the service charge, as the service had been really bad! The waitress said she would need to get the manager, which I would have actually quite liked as a few things needed to be said. However, after 10 minutes she came back saying that we can go. I attempted to explain the reasons being our actions, and she was not at all interested. What a shame!

The service was poor, we waited by the door for a while before being greeted & then had to wait at the bar before our table was ready. We weren't offered a menu or a drink, & ended up sitting down 20 mins after our booking time.
I ordered a chicken salad, which was meant to be warm (and wasn't), and consisted of lettuce & chicken and nothing else. The menu listed walnuts but there weren't any. My partner ordered sausage & mash which was below average. With this meal costing over £40, I wouldn't rush back.
