Trendy, yet with retro charm, the Canteen Royal Festival Hall showcases great British cuisine. Boasting this vintage food in a sleek setting, you can relax and refresh yourself in the well-heeled and iconic South Bank.

Keeping to time-honoured traditions, the Canteen menu offers a range of wholesome, no-nonsense classics. Daily pies and seasonal sausages are on offer, as well as favourites like macaroni cheese or battered fish and chips. Puddings are similarly indulgent and old school, with offerings like apple pie and custard, or gingerbread with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.

An ever-bustling bar at Canteen – Royal Festival Hall offers fine wines, inventive Cockney-themed cocktails and locally-brewed ciders and beers. Homemade cakes, hand-roasted coffees and rare teas populate the afternoon tea, indicative of all the fresh ingredients used at the restaurant.

Located by the riverside in the landmark Royal Festival Hall, the Canteen is perfectly placed to further explore central London, and is just a 3-minute walk from Waterloo Train Station.

We had a good time but the service was really slow, to the extent that we had to rush over the last part. When it came it was pleasant, but they didn't keep an eye on us.

Sat outside under the shade with a cool breeze.

Our 5th visit to this restaurant. Sat outside on a hot night. Excellent pie and chips as usual although the seasonal vegetables were only a large lump of cabbage.

The decor is rather shabby looking and the food not great considering the prices. Good service though.

Very good breakfast options, delicious food

Nice food - nothing extra special but very pleasant and r3asonably priced for the location. Lacked a bit of finesse - no chocolate sprinkled on Cappucino, "celery" with cheese turned out to be no more than a celery flower, but generally ok

Booking was easy, food was good but it's far too expensive. £15.50 for a portion of fish and Chips. It wasn't anymore special than fish and chips anywhere else. Lunch was £85 for 2. 2 x fish and chips, a green salad, and drinks. It's a good location but won't be back.

Food ok, chicken pie pastry was disappointing - def felt like it was micro-waved. Good mojito.

Lovely afternoon tea. Service rather poor despite the restaurant being very quiet.

The wine (house white) hadn't been chilled and was kind of warm. Shame. I always try to have the pie - with mash and greens. This time the pie was fine but the greens were a little too al dente. Friend had onglet steak and chips which he finished off so must have been OK - and he had icecream which made him very happy. The music came on a bit too loud at one point (we had to raise our voices to be heard across the table) but it was turned down eventually. Nice service
