Trendy, yet with retro charm, the Canteen Royal Festival Hall showcases great British cuisine. Boasting this vintage food in a sleek setting, you can relax and refresh yourself in the well-heeled and iconic South Bank.

Keeping to time-honoured traditions, the Canteen menu offers a range of wholesome, no-nonsense classics. Daily pies and seasonal sausages are on offer, as well as favourites like macaroni cheese or battered fish and chips. Puddings are similarly indulgent and old school, with offerings like apple pie and custard, or gingerbread with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.

An ever-bustling bar at Canteen – Royal Festival Hall offers fine wines, inventive Cockney-themed cocktails and locally-brewed ciders and beers. Homemade cakes, hand-roasted coffees and rare teas populate the afternoon tea, indicative of all the fresh ingredients used at the restaurant.

Located by the riverside in the landmark Royal Festival Hall, the Canteen is perfectly placed to further explore central London, and is just a 3-minute walk from Waterloo Train Station.

There were 3 adults & 2 kids in my group. We found the visit very disappointing as we had specifically gone for the roast chicken & scanned the menu for it. However on asking we were told it had recently been removed & a roast dinner was only available Weds & Sun. A lack of 'a roast' seems crazy in a restaurant like Canteen. Although clear we were disappointed the waiter shrugged & we were just told the menu had changed for Spring. Although kids were in the party, it was only by scanning the menu to try to find something to eat that we saw 'kids activity packs' were available. We had to ask for them instead of being offered them. Finally we ate to the serenade of a grinding noise which seemed to be coming from a heater near the door. I remember eating in Canteen as a much nicer experience than this was.

Delicious food and very good service.
We were eating pre-theatre and it was very efficient.

Dishes very small and very disappointing. Everyone was adding salt - very little flavour. Completely different to previous positive visits. Expensive.

There are two problems with this restaurant. The noise and the inattentive staff. 1. In a boomy room full of hard surfaces it is no help if you then bombard diners with loud music making conversation impossible without shouting. 2. The staff do their level best to avoid eye contact with diners at all times. This means you are constantly waiting and trying to attract attention to place orders for both food and drinks. They either need more staff or to invest a bit of time and money in training the ones they have better. The fact that the food was on the whole quite good becomes a side issue when the overall dining experience is so unpleasant.

New menu led to some confusion among staff. Several prices considerably higher. Very noisy - not a relaxed ambiance but staff members pleasant and helpful.

The current menu was vastly inferior to the one available when I first visited Canteen a couple of weeks ago, with a disappointing lack of choice. It was difficult to find anything on the menu I wanted to eat, and this was also true for my companions. The food, when it arrived, was below standard. My partner's chicken salad, for example, which was meant to contain walnuts, arrived without nuts. (Though the waitress brought us a dish of nuts on request.) The wine was overpriced for the quality. Generally, the standard of the food and wine did not justify the price. In addition, a diner at an adjacent table was abusive to a member of our party, forcing us to move tables. We were surprised that the management did not handle this situation better.

This was all very disappointing. When we last visited your restaurant a couple of weeks ago we had a very nice meal and enjoyed ourselves enormously. It was the main reason why we booked the restaurant again for a family occasion. Unfortunately, after last night's experience, we will think twice before visiting Canteen again. Such a shame!
