Trendy, yet with retro charm, the Canteen Royal Festival Hall showcases great British cuisine. Boasting this vintage food in a sleek setting, you can relax and refresh yourself in the well-heeled and iconic South Bank.

Keeping to time-honoured traditions, the Canteen menu offers a range of wholesome, no-nonsense classics. Daily pies and seasonal sausages are on offer, as well as favourites like macaroni cheese or battered fish and chips. Puddings are similarly indulgent and old school, with offerings like apple pie and custard, or gingerbread with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.

An ever-bustling bar at Canteen – Royal Festival Hall offers fine wines, inventive Cockney-themed cocktails and locally-brewed ciders and beers. Homemade cakes, hand-roasted coffees and rare teas populate the afternoon tea, indicative of all the fresh ingredients used at the restaurant.

Located by the riverside in the landmark Royal Festival Hall, the Canteen is perfectly placed to further explore central London, and is just a 3-minute walk from Waterloo Train Station.

Very poor. Sadly this restaurant which used to be so reliable was incredibly disappointing. Squid starter was mostly batter, all four main courses sat on the counter for ten minutes and were cold by the time they were served so we had to send them back. We had to ask twice for water and wine was slow to arrive. I left my chips ( which is unheard of) because they simply weren't nice. We have been regular customers before the National Theatre since they first opened. Before that we were early adopters in Baker Street. What's gone wrong?!!!

Booked for a family meal after previously enjoying the restaurant. Shockingly bad. The food was ok - but the loos were grubby, the seats were peeling, the tables weren't the cleanest, the service was poor (we had to ask about children's meals, and were never told about the specials, which we would have ordered), and we found a cockroach crawling next to our table. The staff member squashed it, thanked us for pointing it out but there was no other acknowledgment or apology or bill reduction. Desserts (ice cream and cheese so no cooking required) took so long to arrive that we cancelled them, then spent about 20 mins with the manager arguing about us not wanting to pay for the desserts or service. I've recommended this restaurant to people in the past, but will never do so again.

I have been there many times in the last 10 years but consider now that for the quality and range of food it is rather expensive - £21 + for one OK bu unexceptional main course and a glass of wine. So these days I only go there if I am going to be attending two concerts within a few days - to have a change. Otherwise I go somewhere whose food is at least as good and less expensive but equally close to my destination.

On arriving and walking towards the front door the young woman at the bookings desk closed the front door having seen me approaching. It was cold and I appreciate the need to preserve the heat but I would have closed it waited 10 seconds by the door and open it thus welcoming the customer (me) in.I would also have broken into a smile of some sort.

I saw my friend I was meeting for lunch (an annual meeting) who had arrived earlier and noticed she was sitting at a seat for two where we would have to sit side by side and not facing each other so I asked for a different table as we wanted to see each other to talk and connect. I was told by the same young woman that there were no other tables ( I could see several empty ones and I have booked in advance) and no attempt was made to seat us at a more appropriate table or apology given (she just didn't care) so my friend paid for her coffee (the young chap serving her seemed lovely by the way) and we went to Skylon instead and had a lovely time.
I had been warned Canteen had gone downhill in advance of my visit but stuck with it as it has always been our annual lunch venue, sadly not anymore.

Our main server was great, but we had three separate servers arriving with things we hadn't ordered during the meal - a bit shambolic! Our table near the bar and not far from the toilet felt a bit cramped. Food was great as usual

A pleasant retaurant with a very flexible menu - all day breakfast, snacks, full meals etc - which is reasonably priced and nicely served. We had the special of the month, which was ok but could have been hotter and with more green veg. We had a very leisurely meal among friends and it was nice not to be rushed.
