Housed in the former headquarters of Samuel Ryder, Café Rouge St. Albans has a wonderful rustic feel that complements the Art Deco building. Serving a delicious range of French dishes, Café Rouge boasts a magnificent glass ceiling.

As part of the nationwide group of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.

In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.

Just around the corner from St. Albans Cathedral, Café Rouge French restaurant is a 6-minute walk from St. Albans Abbey Rail Station.

We had an excellent meal, the service was very good and staff friendly. The building is lovely and huge however we were the only people in there! As we were leaving two others arrived. So not much atmosphere. Also it's almost impossible to park in that area, so as much as we enjoyed our food parking was a big issue.

Good fresh food but why the fancy French names for basic food. For a starter, I ordered soupe au pistou (vegetable soup) but was given soupe a l'oignon (French onion soup). Apologies given by the very kind waitress, but I decided to stay with the onion soup. For the main course I chose demi poulet (chicken and chips) and my wife chose cromequis (salmon fish cake and chips). All very nice but just basic fare.

No mussels. Booked online so should've been told up front. Was only reason for going. Table request not honoured. Won't be returning. Food was awful anyway. Beef tough. Chicken salad was like mdf. Been 18 times shame this time means the end.

We really enjoyed our evening meal in this restaurant. The building itself is beautiful - a conservatory/greenhouse type structure that really suited the 'Frenchness' of the restaurant. (They have a folder detailing the history of the building which is very interesting).
The staff were very helpful, friendly and patient. Food was really good too- beautifully presented and tasted good.

Light and airy setting in a historic building is a plus but there were stained cushions where we sat, and a generally slightly worn out look. The onion soup was more like onion gravy. The chicken salad was ok but carelessly presented. It contained large rough wedges of lettuce, limp bits of bacon and no dressing. When I asked for dressing the waitress said it already had some on it - it did not. She produced a jug of commercial dressing. Staff were amiable but not very clued up; drinks orders were forgotten, while staff - including the manager - chatted with each other behind the bar. They seem to be delivering a tired formula which could do with a rethink.

Very light and bright resturant, not that busy but I visited at 7.30 on a Tuesday, so perhaps a quieter evening! Food was excellent and staff very pleasant and helpful. The best part was the voucher I had which was 50% off main meals!!
