Just off Oxford Street and a short walk from Bond Street Tube, London's Café Rouge James Street is a popular French restaurant near Mayfair with pavement dining.

Mayfair restaurants aren't generally known for being cheap, so this Café Rouge, part of the nationwide group, makes a very affordable alternative for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

The day starts with croissants, baguettes, pain au chocolat and omelettes, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees. For lunch and dinner (most days) you can go for one of the great value set menus or choose from the classic French menu. Options include confit duck, mussels, beef bourguignon, poulet Breton and steak frites, as well as lighter dishes if you're short on time.

To accompany your meal, the James Street Café Rouge has a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.

Small Cafe Rouge with nice atmosphere and decor. Staff were friendly but sometimes too busy so it could be hard to attract their attention. Food was good but it would have been better to serve steak and chips on a hot plate. We had a 50% off voucher which made the meal reasonably priced.

Average food. We ate at 7pm and they had already run out of camembert and moules. The desserts were expensive and pretty tasteless. Would not rush back especially when better restaurants offer deals for much higher quality food. Had cocktails but they were very stingey on adding the Chambord.

The staff is very nice and friendly, very hospitable.

I am not happy that I could not use the voucher even though I booked from 30th of October it was unclear the terms and conditions.
Also it was my birthday few months ago and I used to get complementary wine as being a loyal client but I have not received any complimentary treatment this time.
I have been a regular customer to Cafe Rouge at James street where we love to go as well as to the Highgate Village

Good atmosphere & attentive but unobtrusive service. Food was good quality. Would love you to bring back the dessert and shot of Sauterne wine which was on the menu a few years ago.

The whole experience was excellent. Staff were welcoming and helpful. The food was superb. Both my wife and I had the Poulet Breton followed by the Crepe and we thought that the sauce on the chicken was extremely satisfying.

Overall we had a good dining experience. The staff were attentive but not in an obtrusive way. We ate off the fixed price menu - two courses, which was excellent value. I had the delicious pate and the moules. My friend had the mushrooms on toast and the half chicken, which she thought was tasty and filling. All washed down with a lovely bottle of Picpoul white wine.

My only minor criticism is when we arrived and I said I had a booked a table the waitress indicated one that was crammed between two other tables, which I didn't want to sit at so I pointed to the table I wanted which she was at first was reluctant to let us have. After an initial awkward conversation we were given the table we wanted. I know how restaurants work but at the end of the day I am the paying customer.

I would have given the restaurant 4 stars for service had it not been for how our table seating was handled.

Took a school party of 16 children. Staff were wonderful with them and everyone really enjoyed the evening.
