With the atmosphere of an authentic Parisian café, Café Rouge offers authentic French cuisine to shoppers at Gateshead Metro Centre. A glorious long bar awaits diners inside Café Rouge, while outside there is a spacious courtyard.

As part of the nationwide chain of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.

In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.

Café Rouge Gateshead is within walking distance of the Metrocentre Rail Station, which provides trains into Newcastle every 15 minutes during the day.

    we had a late lunch which was a treat for my birthday. My husband has the mushrooms for starters, which were delicious, we both had steak baguette for mains, and they were cooked exactly as we had requested. For dessert, I had the tarte tatin and hubby had belgian waffle with pear and ice cream, both were very tasty, but were on the small size.

    I have eaten here before and the food is fine, but our latest visit was very disappointing. We were left to seat ourselves, I noticed other customers being indicated to from a distance to seat themselves, (two couples subsequently left without ordering). We arrived at 11.45 am for the Breakfast Bundle, which we've had in the past and enjoyed. It clearly stated until 12 pm for the Breakfast Bundle, we were told we could order this by one waitress, but given lunchtime menus. When we asked about the breakfast menu we were told, very impolitely, by a second waitress that "everyone was ordering lunch now". When we repeated that the Breakfast was still available, the lunchtime menus were whipped out of our hands, literally, and we were told "Well if she said they're still available..." We then ordered two teas and had to return the milk because there were black bits floating in it. Needless to say, because of the rude attitude of the waitress and the unwelcoming atmosphere we did not order any food. As it was, I was going to order something off the lunch menu but wasn't given the chance because, as I said, my menu was whipped away from me. I'm not sure I would return to this particular Cafe Rouge Restaurant, but I might try the Durham establishment.

    We regularly eat at Cafe Rouge at Centre Parcs and like the food. However the service we received at Metro centre was terrible. There was only 3 staff serving the entire restaurant, many customers were complaining about the time they had waited for drinks,food, bills etc. The staff were turning customers away as they just couldn't cope. Fortunately we weren't in a hurry but it took over 30 mins to receive our drinks and nearly an hour to be served our starters, again it took nearly 25mins for the starters to be cleared away when we had finished. We had our main course then could not be bothered to order a dessert as we knew it would take too long to be served. I know it's not the staff's fault as they were running around like headless chicken fending off customer complaints but someone is responsible for the staff rotas.
