In Edinburgh city centre, Café Rouge is housed in a grand building and offers a charming French dining experience. There is a popular outside seating area for al fresco dining.

As part of the nationwide group of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.

In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery and Princess Street Gardens are within easy reach of Café Rouge in Edinburgh. Edinburgh Rail Station is a 12-minute walk away.

A very good dining experience and excellent value for money. I had fantastic garlic mushrooms to start, my daughter said her pate was also very good and my husband enjoyed his onion soup. We all choose different mains - steak (though small) was perfectly cooked and served with a side salad - we ordered fries too and this is probably required for a man's portion. On the other hand my beetroot and goat's cheese tart was not only delicious but also very generous. Daughter loved her chicken salad - the seared chicken was very good. The deal included a glass of fizz - not dry enough for me but given the price can't complain - I ordered a glass of house Sauvignon which was perfect with the tart.

We arrived mid afternoon and the restaurant was quiet yet still had a warm welcoming atmosphere. The staff were very helpful especially in making sure I got a gluten-free meal. We enjoyed the food, my husband's steak was tasty and tender and my half chicken lovely and crispy on the outside and succulent inside. We will go again.

Food was excellent although my wife did comment that her starter was supposed to be served onn Rye toast and it was on what looked like white un-toasted bread. Service was excellent also.

Very welcoming and efficient. Waiters were excellent , friendly and attentive without being invasive. It was very busy but the service was top notch. Our waitress in particular was charming and helpful. Food was delicious. The starter of garlic mushrooms on rye bread was just enough to whet my appetite without spooling it. The Demi poulet could not have been cooked any better. Lunch for 2 people of 2 courses 2 large glasses of a very nice merlot, 3 lattes and a Perrier water came to £52. Will be back.
