In Edinburgh city centre, Café Rouge is housed in a grand building and offers a charming French dining experience. There is a popular outside seating area for al fresco dining.

As part of the nationwide group of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.

In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery and Princess Street Gardens are within easy reach of Café Rouge in Edinburgh. Edinburgh Rail Station is a 12-minute walk away.

We had just sat down and been given menus when a continuous bell started to ring. We were then told it was the smoke alarm but not to worry but then told we had to leave the restaurant due to it being evacuated. It was hard to find somewhere else to eat as the city was packed with rugby fans.

The service was good, however sadly the same could not be said about the food. We ordered the "tarte du jour", which was a vegetable tart. It was very poor. For a main course it was very small, hardly any filling, one piece of hard onion on the top, and a very small and uninteresting salad on the side. I didn't complain at the time as I was with a friend I hadn't seen in years. The previous time I'd eaten there I had the veg tart it - tomato and goats cheese - it was delicious, and a good size. Would think twice about going back now.

Welcome was good, we were shown to our table in a professional manner. Drinks order taken and served promptly. Food order taken didn't quite come as requested however it was easy for my wife to remove anchovies from salad. Food did take a while and the restaurant at that time was not overly busy, but did get busy. The portion sizes for the cost charged were small. We have eaten in Café Rouge many times before throughout UK Edinburgh bit disappointing will not rush back, did not feel it was value for money. However will visit Café Rouge elsewhere, we may return to Edinburgh but not for a while. The staff customer care skills were good with us and other customers

The service was excellent and the waiter could not have been any more helpful when my soup was cold, it was no problem whatsoever to change. Very attentive and pleasant staff.

Excellent restaurant. Nice layout and decor. Music was not too loud. Had the best steak I have ever had with their lovely Roquefort sauce. My partner had the beautiful Bœuf bourguignon.
