In Edinburgh city centre, Café Rouge is housed in a grand building and offers a charming French dining experience. There is a popular outside seating area for al fresco dining.
As part of the nationwide group of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.
In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.
The Scottish National Portrait Gallery and Princess Street Gardens are within easy reach of Café Rouge in Edinburgh. Edinburgh Rail Station is a 12-minute walk away.

Booked two course menu - very good value. Starters were excellent and rump steak was cooked perfectly for each of us.

We ate of the fixed menu and all meals were very good. House wine was good too. Will definitely return

I had booked the £12.95 2 course lunch on line. When I arrived and asked for the 12.95 menu I was told it was not available during the Edinburgh festival fringe. After some negotiation they reluctantly offered this menu. We asked for the wine list and ordered a bottle of the house red at 18.95. They said they had run out of this. Other slightly more expensive wines were also not available. From fleurie onwards at a price of £25 they were available. We were told that a cheaper option of Bordeaux was available by the glass at 7.25 . A bottle was £19.95. We asked for a bottle but apparently we could only have this by the glass. In total we had three glasses costing almost £24. Sharp practice ? Don't understand the reasoning apart from making more money ...I WILl NOT Be Back but then you have a captive population at the moment ...

We had a lovely family meal here last night, the place was buzzing & felt like we could be in Paris! They had run out of the veggie starter but brought us complimentary bread & olives which were delicious! The goats cheese & beetroot tart wasn't great (tasted more like an apple & blackberry crumble) but the potato dauphinois & creme brûlée...amazing!!!!

We had an early dinner in a quiet café rouge which was decidedly average at best, the staff were attentive and polite, but the food was just ok for a £100 bill -2 adults and 2 kids, my wife's salmon salad was heavy on salad leaves and light on the salmon, the garlic prawns were hot but awkward to shell , and one child's burger arrived long before all the other mains, indeed the waiter had to chase them up for us, so room for improvement in the kitchen dept

Simple French cuisine, not many veg options but very tasty.

Lunch service was busy with an older crowd of tourists and couples. Service was efficient. Dining room was pleasant if a little warm with ceiling fans lazily moving. Went for the Price Fixe menu which was very good value. Neither of my choices off that menu was "on" the day I was in, so had to go for 2nd choice starter and main. Onion soup was tasty but slightly over-thickened with flour, half chicken was overcooked but pleasant enough. Chose to have a dessert and the crème brulée was lovely.
