Booked two course menu - very good value. Starters were excellent and rump steak was cooked perfectly for each of us.

In Edinburgh city centre, Café Rouge is housed in a grand building and offers a charming French dining experience. There is a popular outside seating area for al fresco dining.

As part of the nationwide group of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.

In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery and Princess Street Gardens are within easy reach of Café Rouge in Edinburgh. Edinburgh Rail Station is a 12-minute walk away.

Food was just okay. Waiter was very nice. Think a male would still be hungry after their meal.

We have been to Care Rouge many times on a Saturday afternoon for lunch or for a late bottle of wine and sharing platter and have always had great food, however we had the shared steak dish on the bone which was not the best, and also the potatoes got cold very quickly, maybe because the plates were stone cold with hot food going on them.

Nice atmosphere and good food. The fixed price menu at £13.95 is excellent value. Pleasant staff too

Parisian cafe feel with Michelin-level kitchen and canny Scots prices. The maitre de was friendly (and funny), the service was attentive (allowing for the number of patrons) and the whole evening was everything we had hoped. The poulet Breton was absolutely superb, and the fillet (with Bearnaise) was tender, tasty and cooked precisely to specification.

I was disappointed. I'd presumed that the Bookatable offer was something special, but the £12.95 deal was ongoing for everyone. The menu was limited for my vegetarian friend. My steak was overdone (though the management gave us free coffees as compensation). All OK, though really nothing exciting. The service was good with a sympathetic waitress.

We ate of the fixed menu and all meals were very good. House wine was good too. Will definitely return

I had booked the £12.95 2 course lunch on line. When I arrived and asked for the 12.95 menu I was told it was not available during the Edinburgh festival fringe. After some negotiation they reluctantly offered this menu. We asked for the wine list and ordered a bottle of the house red at 18.95. They said they had run out of this. Other slightly more expensive wines were also not available. From fleurie onwards at a price of £25 they were available. We were told that a cheaper option of Bordeaux was available by the glass at 7.25 . A bottle was £19.95. We asked for a bottle but apparently we could only have this by the glass. In total we had three glasses costing almost £24. Sharp practice ? Don't understand the reasoning apart from making more money ...I WILl NOT Be Back but then you have a captive population at the moment ...

We had a lovely family meal here last night, the place was buzzing & felt like we could be in Paris! They had run out of the veggie starter but brought us complimentary bread & olives which were delicious! The goats cheese & beetroot tart wasn't great (tasted more like an apple & blackberry crumble) but the potato dauphinois & creme brûlée...amazing!!!!
    Thank you!
