In Edinburgh city centre, Café Rouge is housed in a grand building and offers a charming French dining experience. There is a popular outside seating area for al fresco dining.

As part of the nationwide group of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.

In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery and Princess Street Gardens are within easy reach of Café Rouge in Edinburgh. Edinburgh Rail Station is a 12-minute walk away.

Simple French cuisine, not many veg options but very tasty.

Lunch service was busy with an older crowd of tourists and couples. Service was efficient. Dining room was pleasant if a little warm with ceiling fans lazily moving. Went for the Price Fixe menu which was very good value. Neither of my choices off that menu was "on" the day I was in, so had to go for 2nd choice starter and main. Onion soup was tasty but slightly over-thickened with flour, half chicken was overcooked but pleasant enough. Chose to have a dessert and the crème brulée was lovely.

It was busy and quite warm but we got a nice table with a bit of a cross breeze. The food was very good and the waiter was attentive.

Excellent meal and friendly service. Onion soup really tasty. Only(minor) complaint - could have done with some air conditioning.

I found the restaurant to be relaxing with a friendly atmosphere. The breaded camembert with cranberry was delicious. The fishcakes went down a treat with my husband, my daughter devoured the burger and I enjoyed a minute steak. All of which were ample portions. Non of the overload you get in some restaurants.

We were attracted back to Cafe Rouge by a craving for decent French onion soup and the £15 for 2 course and a glass of fizz deal. Both worked our well. The food was great, service spot on and the atmosphere was buzzing. Loved it. What could be better? We found the portions way too big and sadly both had to leave half of our main courses and had no room for the desert we'd promised ourselves or even a coffee!
