Great food. Good service. Pity it wasn't busy at the time.

Overlooking the Wear, Café Rouge Durham has a wide selection of French dishes. The cosy interior complete with retro pictures and red banquettes add to the French atmosphere.

As part of the nationwide group of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.

In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.

Set over 2 floors, Café Rouge Durham is within a 5-minute walk of the Milburngate shopping centre and Durham Cathedral.

Booked online with no problems. We all enjoyed our meal, though I think a shortage of vegetables as we only had green beans and my mother can't remember them on her plate, also my 19 year old son would have liked the portion of chips to be much bigger

Kids meals good value. We all had burgers which were nice but in cheap white bread roles. Waitress was lovely but didn't know what a cafetiere of coffee was. It was busy but didn't wait too long. Puddings tasted nice but not presented well. They didn't have dessert spoons for pudding so we had to manage with soup spoons.

Our group of four had a great time. There is lots of choice on the menu. We had the sharing plate to start, which was varied and very tasty. The beef bourgignon was delicious and the steak exactly as requested. The service was friendly and very efficient. The atmosphere was very lively.

Great evening at the Cafe Rouge in Durham. As I had booked without realising that it was the Durham Lumiere Festival they even sent me passes to get through the barriers which were closed at 4.30pm. I was very impressed by the helpfulness of the staff and the quality of the food. We even went back for breakfast the next day. Excellent all round ambiance in this restaurant. I have been visiting Cafe Rouge restaurants for years and always love them.

Lovely atmosphere and service was amazing.. Definitely recommend the mussels while they're in season, the sauce was a little watery but other than that lovely.. The steak was cooked to perfection. Overall would definitely go again and recommend!!
