I like this chain for simple French food. Onion soup, steak chips and red wine. The coffee is good too.

Decorated in the definitive Café Rouge style, this Cambridge branch serves French cuisine on Bridge Street, midway between the punts and the city centre shops.

Belonging to the popular UK-wide group of Café Rouge restaurants, this restaurant offers their range of classic French dishes such as deep-fried camembert, steak frites, beef bourguignon and confit duck. For those short on time, lighter dishes are available, and the set menus provide excellent value for those on a budget. To drink, there is a range of French wines, many from less well known producers.

As you would expect from a French restaurant, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. For a great start to the day, you can choose from croissants, pain au chocolat, baguettes, omelettes and croques, with hot chocolate, tea and coffees as an accompaniment.

The handy location of Cambridge Café Rouge near to the river and most famous colleges makes it a popular choice for tourists, but it is also good for a meal out before going to the pubs and bars on Bridge Street or in the city centre.

The waiter was very friendly and smiley so service good. The food was average I think the steak should come with some fresh salad but the restaurant is good for a group and nice atmosphere.

The food that was served was amazing, so we thank the chef. But the whole experience was let down by the lack of service we received. As soon as we got there we were seated and given the menu. It is at this point you'd expect to be told if something isn't on the menu due to a shortage. We were not, so we decided what we wanted. When we finally got their attention we were then told, they don't have that. So we had to rethink. Not the biggest problem in the world. When food came it was delicious. After eating, it took 20 minutes for our empty plates to be cleared and asked if we want desserts. Straight away I knew what I wanted so no time wasted. After that point a further 15-20 minutes passed before I received my dessert which was a chocolate fondant sponge with ice cream. There is no chance at all it takes that long. So when it finally came I was very unamused and I believe the only reason it came was because another table complained they were waiting for their food still.

We were give. The dessert for free as an apology in the end which is nice. But we were paying with clubcard vouchers so it made no odds to our pocket as you don't get refunds on a £40 voucher.

Great food but let down by very poor service.
