In Bristol Cribbs Causeway shopping centre, Café Rouge offers a delectable array of French dishes. With red banquettes and authentic art, Café Rouge has a traditional Parisian atmosphere.

As part of the nationwide group of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.

In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.

Close to ample free parking at Bristol Cribbs Causeway, Café Rouge is ideal for a quick snack between shops, or for a more hearty evening meal.

My friend and I had the set lunch menu. She liked her French Onion soup, followed by the minute steak and frites. However, I had the croquettes and the salad with goat's cheese. I felt that both dishes were bulked out way too much by the lettuce and the pea shoots rather than the other ingredients so I got the impression that this was to make the dishes appear good value and of good size. There was hardly any goat's cheese on the salad. The berry lemonade hadn't even been stirred so the flavouring was at the bottom of the glass.

There was confusion on arrival. Two of our party, arriving together, were seated at one table and two at another - only one name had been used in booking.
First courses of Onion Soup -'delicious'; and sharing platter or fromage et charcuterie in which the charcuterie was interesting and good, but the fromage was done to death.
Mains - a quiche 'good but not much of it'; supreme of chicken - 'dry and seriously overcooked'; moules marinière - 'big portion and freshly cooked, but I've had better'. In all cases the 'frites' were rather tired.
Desserts - Crème Brulée - 'excellent': salted caramel parfait - 'really not very nice'; Rum Baba - 'a disappointment'.
Service excellent. We had a 50% off voucher which made the meal good value at £15 a head but the idea of paying the full price just would not appeal.
The overall impression was that one is paying high prices for a pretty low location and comfort, with food that could be better cooked. Personally I would not return without another voucher.

Everything went well - and the food was good too!

Food was pretty bad. The place was nearly empty yet my rouge burger was so dry it was difficult to cut into or chew. The bun was so dry and crusty that it broke apart when touched. The water jug and glasses were dirty when they arrived.

Luckily I was using clubcard vouchers and gift cards rather than my own money.
