Inside the iconic Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Café Modern Two is a stylish eatery that boasts period features, mirrored ceilings, and even sculptures from the gallery itself. Wholesome lunches and traditional afternoon teas are paired with a carefully crafted wine list.
The Café Modern Two menu focuses on wholesome, flavourful European recipes for its lunch menus. Fresh focaccia sandwiches are generously filled, while mains include lightly chargrilled salmon with fresh greens. Warming soups are popular choices, and antipasti platters of cured meats and delicate cheeses are perfect for groups to share.
Afternoon teas at Café Modern Two in Edinburgh are wonderfully traditional, and include warm scones with jam and clotted cream, loose leaf teas, fingers sandwiches, and sweet treats like mini redcurrant and almond cakes.
A tranquil, stylish spot to refuel whilst browsing the galleries, Café Modern Two is moments from the Water of Leith, and only 15 minutes' walk from Haymarket Train Station.

Service good. Food average. Coffee rather weak. Nice location and accessible. Good parking

While we received a warm and helpful reception--the food was pretty mediocre--so too the dessert. We'll certainly come back and try something off the menu rather than the special...

Nice food and pleasant service but we were tucked away behind a large tower of scrap metal.

This was a most disappointing experience. We called in for coffee at 1100 prior to visiting the Gallery's featured exhibition. The service was slow and the coffees were so tepid that we sent them back for fresh cups which, to be fair, were readily provided with apologies.
We'd booked lunch for ourselves and friends and again were disappointed. Two of us chose fish pie which proved to consist of a rather shallow dish with fish in a sauce mix topped with a cold slab of puff pastry rather than with potato as is customary and with a green salad. To be fair the Croque Madame was tasty though the bread was rather on the "doorstep" side! We opted to finish off with cake as desserts and again were disappointed as they proved to be rather dry, possibly as a consequence of being left open on the counter rather than being covered until being cut and served. The cost of lunch, which came just short of £60 for the four of us,seemed overpriced for the quality of the food and we certainly won't be in a hurry to patronise the restaurant again.

The afternoon tea was a bit disappointing. The small cup of soup was tasty but on the cool side. Sandwiches were very nice and the cheesecake in a glass was yummy. However the scones were burnt to a cinder. The fruit currant was just like charcoal. We had to send back and the second ones were only slightly less burnt. I noticed that other people had to complain about their scones too. We had tea strainers but nothing to lay on so we let them drain on a napkin. Won't be having afternoon tea there again.

Our experience at the venue was mostly positive.
(1) food was excellent, good variety and no complaints. (2) staff were pleasant and attentive although they were clearly very busy, they did all they could to make our visit enjoyable.
The only aspect we were disappointed with was the table offered on our arrival which was in the busy footfall area, however on asking to be re- sited to a table at the window this was arranged for us. We would have been happier not to have had to make this request considering we booked well in advance and arrived promptly at the time arranged.

Husband had soup and croquet madam, daughter had Cullen skink and a cheese scone, granddaughter and I each had chicken and bacon toasted wrap plus drinks. All agreed that all the dishes were delicious with an attention to detail. All very moreish and to be recommended. Staff were very welcoming and attentive when needed. I'm in a wheel chair but the table was rearranged without any fuss to make it easier for me.
Next time we hope to try the sweet options.

Lovely, varied lunch menu with lots of tempting items and emphasis on local produce. Reasonably priced. Attractive surroundings. Friendly, professional service.
