AA Rosette-awarded Brunel’s Northern Ireland comes from one of the UK’s most adventurous chefs. In the shadow of the Mountains of Mourne, the location is echoed in the chef’s passion for foraged food.

Brunel’s restaurant menu focuses on seasonal produce, with dishes changing accordingly. Highlights include smoked venison carpaccio with salt-baked beets, pickled blackberries, liquorice and wood sorrel, which emphasise the use of earthy, natural ingredients. Try dishes like the pan-seared wood pigeon breast and pastille with salt-baked celeriac and beetroot, cocoa nibs, dandelion root and blackberry gel.

Puddings are just as innovative, featuring locally foraged sea buckthorn curd with rosehip syrup, pumpkin seed and brown butter granola, lemon thyme and fennel meringue. Inventive cocktails might include ingredients such as pumpkin jam or feature smoke and glitter.

The intimate and relaxed setting with rough-hewn tables and chairs enhances the experience and the candlelit dinners are perfect for a peaceful, romantic fine-dining experience. Brunel’s, Newcastle is a 12-minute walk from Ulsterbus Station.

bottle of wine came after a second request. wine glass was not correct type for white wine. paper napkins for a res. serving food at upmarket prices? my starter of mussels was fine in flavour/ the mussels I thought were very small/ better quality could be got I am sure. no spoon to enjoy the broth until requested. main course# first impression very nice but not a lot of it. the plaice was overcooked a bit. the chicken skin was not crisp as for the dulse butter = I would describe it as a disaster. it caught my eye on the menu but was a real let down. by this stage it was time to leave . I arrived as a result of good recommendations but left still hungry and disappointed. I will not be publishing any bad reviews on you business but write this to give you a chance to improve for other customers.

Staff were excellent and knew the dishes very well. Obviously they had been trained very well. They were not intrusive and were on hand if we needed anything.
The food was really like fine dining and could not be faulted in any way.
The meal was hot and the flavours went very well together.
They cater for intolerances and do it willingly.

Excellent experience. We have been here before with half the customers and twice the staff but the two waiters worked hard to meet demand

I heard about this restaurant from a friend and it was fantastic, from the extremely friendly reception, to the yummy food which was very well presented with a bit of theatre and the taste was sublime. The atmosphere was great and the service was exceptional. I will most definitely be back when visiting Newcastle.
