AA Rosette-awarded Brunel’s Northern Ireland comes from one of the UK’s most adventurous chefs. In the shadow of the Mountains of Mourne, the location is echoed in the chef’s passion for foraged food.

Brunel’s restaurant menu focuses on seasonal produce, with dishes changing accordingly. Highlights include smoked venison carpaccio with salt-baked beets, pickled blackberries, liquorice and wood sorrel, which emphasise the use of earthy, natural ingredients. Try dishes like the pan-seared wood pigeon breast and pastille with salt-baked celeriac and beetroot, cocoa nibs, dandelion root and blackberry gel.

Puddings are just as innovative, featuring locally foraged sea buckthorn curd with rosehip syrup, pumpkin seed and brown butter granola, lemon thyme and fennel meringue. Inventive cocktails might include ingredients such as pumpkin jam or feature smoke and glitter.

The intimate and relaxed setting with rough-hewn tables and chairs enhances the experience and the candlelit dinners are perfect for a peaceful, romantic fine-dining experience. Brunel’s, Newcastle is a 12-minute walk from Ulsterbus Station.

Best meal we have had in a restaurant in a while, beautifully presented and piping hot. Real fine dining experience the staff were very friendly and it was a very relaxed atmosphere. We celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary and were presented with complimentary cocktails which was a lovely surprise. Fab restaurant and excellent value for money. Will definitely be back.

The food was mostly delicious but I wasn't impressed by the tatty and stained brown carpet and red velvet curtain. Decor was dull and tired. The chairs were rickety. The ladies toilet was cute. I would say Brunels is in desperate need of a revamp but my friend says they are moving so maybe that's why. Staff were friendly and attentive enough but service was very slow. The tables weren't cleared properly between courses. Water jugs were replenished without asking which was appreciated. I didn't realise the restaurant was on the first floor and my elderly mother had difficulty negotiating the stairs. I never saw this mentioned anywhere. The food was excellent except for a big lump of fat left on my roast beef. However it and the vegetables were cooked perfectly. Lovely to see organic vegetables. Starters excellent.except for the extremely dry crispy brioche roll. Everybody enjoyed their mains and desserts. The brownie was yummy. The chocolate crumb thing served with my mum's ice cream was horrible. Far too sugary. Good wine selection. Yes I would go back if the horrible decor was improved.
