Dining out is one of life’s great pleasures. But wouldn’t it be better if your food was delivered by a waiter on a zip-wire? Or how about if you could eat in a tree? Featuring cats, toilets, giraffes and condoms, we’ve rounded up the most ludicrous restaurants the world has to offer. Dinner in a prison anyone?
1) Izakaya Kayabuki, Japan
A lot of waiters get paid peanuts, but can you say that you’ve actually been served by a monkey?
2) Redwoods Treehouse, New Zealand
How did they get planning permission for this?
3) New Lucky restaurant, India
If you own property on the site of a cemetery with coffins everywhere, the logical thing to do is clearly to build a restaurant around the dead.
4) Cabbages and Condoms, Thailand
This man has a condom on his head. This restaurant is condom-themed. Each to their own I guess.
5) Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium, London
It wouldn’t be the internet without a cat video…
6) Modern Toilet, Taiwan
I’m sure there’s a good reason for this. Maybe.
7) Ithaa Maldives
Because eating dinner above sea level is just so last year.
8) Kraton Flying Chicken Restaurant, Bangkok
Chickens are set on fire, catapulted through the air and skewered on the spiked helmets of unicycle-riding waiters. Do not try this in your local fried chicken establishment.
9) Dinner in the sky, various
We’re all thinking it: where are the toilets?
10) Giraffe Manor, Kenya
“Excuse me waiter, there’s a giraffe in my soup.”
11) Dans le Noir, London
At this unusual restaurant, diners eat in the dark. A great game is to sneak out halfway through and leave your dad talking to himself.
12) Twin Stars Diner, Moscow
Yep, all the staff are identically dressed twins. Nope, no idea why.
13) Fortezza Medicea Restaurant, Italy
A restaurant in a prison, where food is served by actual inmates. I imagine porridge is on the menu.
14) Disaster Café, Spain
What’s more normal than eating dinner in an earthquake simulator?
15) Bunga Bunga, London
Enter through an Italian phonebox into a bizarre Silvio Berlusconi-themed restaurant. Inappropriate remarks and questionable politics optional.
16) Le refuge des fondus, Paris
Eat fondu, climb over the table and drink wine out of a baby bottle. Freud would have a field day.
17) Flash Sushi, various
Pop-ups where you eat sushi off a naked woman. Not one for a family get-together.
18) Restophone, France
Phones on every table allow you to flirt with fellow diners. Not one for date night.
19) Royal Dragon, Thailand
At the 5,000 seat Royal Dragon, the flying waiters will rush your dinner to you – on a zipwire. That probably deserves a tip.
20) Bau Haus Dog Café , South Korea
I like dogs. I like cake. Perfect.
21) Ellen’s Stardust Diner, USA
If music be the food of love and all that… waiters singing showtunes whilst guests eat burgers might not be what Shakespeare had in mind, but it’s certainly different. (For another quirky singalong, try Bel Canto in London)
22) Kinderkookkafe, Amsterdam
Everything in this place is cooked and served by children. How adorable. But is it just me or is there something really creepy about this photo?
23) Dalu Robot Restaurant, China
What’s the etiquette for tipping a robot waiter?
24) Conflict Kitchen
A picture speaks a thousand words. After seeing this picture, I have no words.
25) Bawabet Dimashq, Syria
The largest restaurant in the world at 215,000 square feet with 6,014 seats. The entire population of the Falkland Islands could fit in there twice.
