For a city with few hills and even less snow, there’s a somewhat surprising abundance of ski lodges flurrying through London this winter. But a lack of slopes won’t stop us taking shelter chalet-style: glide your way to our top picks for staying warm and toasty (and nicely topped up with mulled beverages) this season.
1. York & Albany Book York & Albany Restaurant
Back for another year, the veteran of London ski lodges York & Albany has winter cocktails and festive fayre down to an art. Despite being a stone’s throw from Regent’s park, this alpine-style lodge wouldn’t look out of place on a mountain side, with a littering of pine cones, glowy lanterns, spiced candles and faux fur throws. Cockle-warming drinks include the winter-spiced old fashioned and Bombardino and Cream, while toasty comfort food includes everyone’s favourite melted-cheese-fest raclette, or baked Alaska.
2. Forest Book Forest
Probably boasting the highest altitude of our top winter ski lodges, Forest sits atop Selfridges on Oxford Street. Leave the shopper bustle to it and head to this enchanting woodland oasis, where the menu is the perfect blend of winter wholesomeness and at-one-with-nature goodness: think hot pots, grilled meats and fish, and seasonal veggies.
3. Lodge d’Argent Book Coq d’Argent Restaurant
A magnificent rooftop restaurant above the bustle of the city, Coq d’Argent presents an idyllic French-ski-lodge transformation of its toasty heated roof terrace. Vintage ski memorabilia and polar bear snow globes are dotted throughout this enchanting winter hideout, and guests can stay chill-free with thick patterned throws. This hotly anticipated pop up runs from November 18th through to the end of February 2016, where wintry recipes will include tartiflette, venison burger and chestnut macarons.
4. Montague Ski Lodge Book Montague Ski Lodge
The closest you’re likely to get to a real-deal alpine lodge in London, Montague Ski Lodge features heritage-style winter décor, with plush Chesterfields, tartan cushions and plenty of festive figurines dotted throughout. Along with the lengthy list of windpipe-warming vodkas, schnapps and mulled wine, tasty platters of bratwurst, camembert and mini turkey burgers help banish any chills. Any Scrooges are sure to have their moods lifted with an excess of powder-dusted pine trees, snowmen and reindeers.
5. The Lodge
The brainchild of London pop-up maestro Jimmy Garcia, The Lodge in Clapham eases us into winter with its moodily-lit, chequered blanket-filled hideaway. Hot cocktails and even hotter foodstuffs span from partridge croquettes and bubbling Neal’s Yard cheese fondue, to baked Alaska buttered rum and Jamaican hot toddies. If your stint in a winter lodge isn’t complete without a drift of fake snow, you’re in luck: the private dining room is full of the stuff, as well as boasting its own patio, and a burner for marshmallow toasting.
