Review: Food Zen at the Hempel

The Hempel Restaurant

Number 35 at The Hempel

A leafy oasis tucked away in Notting Hill, The Hempel offers true food Zen at No 35 Restaurant. We sampled the decadent yet delicate 6-course tasting menu, packed with seasonal summer flavours, each plate served with pure artistic flair.  Complete with paradisal Zen Garden, this 5-star boutique hotel has an air of serenity, boasting an incredibly chic restaurant that demands a visit!

Chilled cucumber soup

The first entrance on the tasting menu is the chilled cucumber soup; a summery, fresh palate cleanser, topped with a pretty, and edible, violet borage flower. Yoghurt sorbet works incredibly well, quirkily balanced by the right bite of watermelon and feta.

Marinated organic salmon

Marinated organic salmon with breakfast radishes and pickled mouli is surely far too pretty to eat. It must be done, however. Beautifully light avocado mousse is a perfect match for the lightly seared morsels of pink salmon.

Duck liver paté

An indulgent and creamy duck liver pâté follows, dusted with crunchy hazelnuts and scattered with piquant scarlet, yellow and burgundy baby beetroots.  A rich port syrup is drizzled generously throughout, offsetting the deep richness of the duck perfectly.

Lamb rump

Next, a tenderly pink cut of Rhug Estate lamb rump is served. A summery mix of sweet English peas, broad beans and minted potatoes nestle alongside.

Wild sea bass, violet artichokes and fennel

The second main course creation was beautifully cooked line caught wild sea bass with violet artichokes and fennel, dashed with a smoky aubergine purée.

Meringue cheescake mousse

Refined and elegant, the first of two desserts is outstandingly good. Crisp, white matches of meringue sit atop a jewelled throne of exquisite vanilla cheesecake mousse, elderflower jelly and sweet, marinated strawberries.

Chocolte fondant with cherries

To round things off, the dark chocolate pudding is the perfect antithesis to its predecessor. Studded with ruby-like, juicy cherries, the hot chocolate Valrhona fondant is a seductive finish to a magnificent tasting menu. You’ll get just the right hit of coffee rush from the espresso parfait combined with a high from the deep cocoa flavours, incredible!

Number 35 Restaurant at The Hempel is a real revelation, and in truth, better than some Michelin star restaurants I have dined at. Head Chef Mike Carter is evidently passionate about the culinary creations, adding a touch of artistic flair to each course. The exquisite tasting menu is an absolute steal and comes highly recommended!

About Lili Levi

When not gorging her face in London restaurants, Lili can be found prowling street feast markets and cooking up a storm for ‘Come Dine with Me’ parties. A few of her favourite restaurants currently are L’Autre Pied, Typing Room and sketch Lecture Room. She enjoys a good bake-off but the weirdest cake she ever made was a green marshmallow grasshopper pie.
