Hawksmoor, Seven Dials
At the classic Seven Dials venue in Covent Garden, you can dine in the subterranean depths of the Watney-Combe brewery. The iconic steakhouse blackboard is a timeless emblem at Hawksmoor, scrawled with chalked etchings in bold, monochrome display. You can choose from the classic porterhouse, the prime rib or the chateaubriand, to mention a few.
We went for the tender ribeye steak, which was packed with rich flavour; the charred outside giving way to a perfectly medium rare pink inside. This was the business, and surely what proper steak should taste like.
A meat lover’s paradise, you can also feast on more adventurous novelties at Hawksmoor, like rich bone marrow on toast, brought to you in chunky caveman-style bones.
Meticulously sourced meat from multi-award-winning The Ginger Pig ensures that some of London’s finest steaks grace the tables at Hawksmoor. Cooked on a sizzling charcoal grill, the deep flavour is sealed in with succulent perfection.
A popular competitor to the bold hunks of steak is the now legendary Kimchi burger, at Hawksmoor Seven Dials. Stacked with juicy beef, cut with piquant kimchi pickle and served alongside hot, triple-cooked chips, this burger has made a real name for itself.
Once I had a taste of Hawksmoor, it wasn’t long before I returned. It’s not just steaks that are executed beautifully – the cocktails are pretty special too. The newly opened Guildhall location has a slick Art Deco feel, with old school banquettes and a splendid Prohibition-style bar. Be warned, if you go for breakfast there, you may come out a touch sozzled before you know it.
Tempted by a retro array of vintage-themed cocktails, I tried a ‘Salty Dog’ – a fresh grapefruit and vodka cocktail with a punchy, sea salt-rimmed glass. It was only 8:30am and the waitresses were singing the joys of the cocktail list! The impressionable amongst you may be easily tempted by the quirky ‘anti-fogmatic’ or ‘corpse reviver’ cocktail marriages.
Hawksmoor Guildhall, Bar
For bold and brave groups, there is an epic ‘8-course tour of a cow’ at Hawksmoor Guildhall, featuring a tongue-to-tail beef tasting menu. It’ll set you back a few bob, but this is a once-in-a-lifetime bovine journey of colossal proportions.
If you are after true carnivorous indulgence, go and try the best steak in London at Hawksmoor.
