Cloud 23, Manchester
From day one, Manchester’s Cloud 23 was a place to see and be seen. Jutting out at the half-way point of the 47 storey Beetham Tower, the sky bar quickly became a Manchester icon. Six years on from the fireworks display that celebrated the completion of the building, the buzz is still there. For good reason. In a world where ‘unique’ has become an overused word, Cloud 23 is the real deal – where else can you sip an Ena Sparkles cocktail while looking down over Coronation Street and across to a spectacular view that takes in 10 English counties?
Cloud 23’s popularity means there are queues at busy times. But although you may have to wait a little to get in, you won’t find yourself jostling crowds for a place at the bar. Maximum capacity is just 200, so there is space sit, relax, and savour the bespoke cocktails and the exhilarating views, framed by floor to ceiling windows.
To the west, the view takes in Liverpool Cathedral and the mountains of Snowdonia, to the south, the Cheshire plain and the distant Shropshire hills, and to the east, the city centre landmarks and the Peak District hills. After dark, the views of the city lights make Cloud 23 an unbeatable spot for a special night out. The bar’s decor is sleek and sophisticated, with rich red drapes and soft red lighting setting off a contemporary style featuring black leather settees, aluminium designer chairs, and cool granite flooring.
Come to Cloud 23 for drinks, and you’ll find a great selection of champagnes, well-chosen wines and classic cocktail combinations, plus exclusive mixes inspired by the location. Try Cottonopolis, an explosion of fruit flavours combining elderflower and pear with the citrus tang of Tanqueray gin, or Head in the Clouds, a champagne mix with bittersweet Aperol and Limoncelle and a hint of fresh lemon. Most cocktails are priced at £8.50, champagne mixes at £11.50.
If you’re out to impress, book to put your name on the guest list. You’ll be whisked along the red carpet to the head of the queue to the express lift that takes you direct to the 23rd floor, bypassing the 22 floors occupied by the Hilton Hotel. But make sure you plan ahead – there’s a two–three month waiting list for Friday and Saturday night bookings.
Cloud 23 also makes a spectacular hideaway for a luxurious afternoon tea (by reservation only). The food is everything you would expect: dainty sandwiches, scones and traditional cakes, all washed down with a nice cup of tea – and not an inch of chintz in sigh. The standard menu costs £16.95, with a special £30 Diamond Jubilee afternoon tea menu available between the 25th May and the 8th June. Celebratory extras include gin champagne fizz to start and a refreshing Pimms to finish.
Cloud 23 is reached from the lobby of the Hilton Hotel, just a few minute’s walk from Deansgate station.
