On the picturesque St Helen’s Square, Bettys York is an elegant café serving lunch, dinner and afternoon teas. Inspired by the founder’s experience on the maiden voyage of the Queen Mary, the café is decked out in wood panelling, with large curved windows and ornate mirrors.
Afternoon tea at Bettys York involves a vast selection of teas, served with sweet and savoury delights. Classic blends join exotic black, green and white teas, as well as herbal blends on the lengthy tea menu. Traditional fresh sandwiches are followed by freshly baked sultana scones with strawberry preserve and Yorkshire clotted cream, as well as a selection of handmade cakes.
Add a touch of indulgence to afternoon tea with a glass of champagne, or sample the wide choice of specialty coffees, world wines, and local ales. Bettys also hosts regular events and live music, making it a lively venue day and night.
Bettys York is a 9-minute walk from York Train Station.

I've been to Betty's quite a few times and have always been delighted... until now.
I don't know if they were just having a bad day but it wasn't up to its usual standard. Our waitress was a bit stroppy and while not exactly unfriendly gave the distinct impression we were just too much trouble.
I had made a point of letting them know our special dietary requirements beforehand and this had been acknowledged, but we were treated like we were asking for something outrageous.
We waited a long time for the tea to arrive then couldn't get a refill of the teapot. Everything came out in the wrong order. The sandwiches took ages - we asked for another round and only half arrived.
All this sounds trivial, I know, and I guess it is. But you go to Betty's because its excellent. You pay the money for superb service and attention to detail, so we came away disappointed and feeling a bit cheated.
Don't get me wrong - the food was fabulous - the piano played - everything sparkled... but there was an air of narkiness that made us feel uncomfortable.
Was it a "one-off"? I hope so. Would we go back? Undoubtedly. I guess the worst thing is that its made me lose faith in the fact that Betty's are always absolutely spot on.

We had spent a lovely afternoon in betty tearoom. Staff were kind and polite. We enjoyed the food and drink, especially the rise champagne . Btw, may I know the brand of the champagne ? Thanks so much

The food was really good, one of my friends requested no butter on her sandwiches and this was catered for. The only downside was that we were sat near to the lady playing the piano and although she was good, we couldn't really hold a conversation as we couldn't hear each other.

Delicious Champagne afternoon tea to celebrate my husbands birthday. Food and ambience were both lovely and it was so nice to have the grand piano playing over lunch. Having noted on the booking that is was my husbands birthday, the fondant fancy birthday cake was a lovely touch and the happy Birthday and candles just added to the experience; great treat for a special occasion! Even better that Betty's offered to box it up to take home along with some complimentary mini loose leaf tea caddies!

We had afternoon tea at Betty's. It was a fabulous experience, luxurious and indulgent. After a small delay at the door (caused by several groups arriving at once) we had a brilliant time. The food was excellent and the pianist really added to the relaxed and peaceful atmosphere.
