Fabulous! From the warm welcome to the friendly, attentive service we could not have had a better time! They even brought a cake and candle for my daughter, who was celebrating her 21st birthday, without being asked!

Bettys Harrogate has been offering afternoon teas, and a blend of British and Swiss cuisine since 1919. The original Bettys Café, the restaurant overlooks the floral landscapes of The Stray outside.
Afternoon teas at Betty Harrogate include a luxurious selection of sandwiches, cakes, patisseries and teas. Indulge in a traditional cream tea with scones and Yorkshire clotted cream, treat yourself to a champagne afternoon tea, or choose from the lavish cake trolley.
Combining the hearty influences of Swiss and Yorkshire cuisines, the Bettys menu places bacon and raclette rosti and swiss alpine macaroni alongside classics like fish and chips and slow-cooked steak pie. More Mediterranean influences also feature, including butternut squash tortelloni in sage butter with chestnut mushrooms, fresh spinach and toasted hazelnuts. For a lighter dish, try one of the speciality sandwiches, salads and omelettes.
In the centre of the picturesque North Yorkshire spa town, Bettys Harrogate is a 10-minute walk from Harrogate Train Station.

Not bad, but not good. First the ok stuff - the location is lovely and atmosphere relaxed.
The food was, ok, but frankly uninspired. Afternoon tea is usually a refined affair with every detail carefully thought through - gels, flavour bursts, micro herbs etc. Betty's seem to think that by simply miniaturising items, that is enough. So tiny ham, egg and coronation chicken sandwiches were fine - but other than being small, were no different and no better crafted than something from Greggs. A small piece of pork pie showed no skill. Likewise with the cakes - very standard offerings made small - battenburg, meringue basket, choux bun. 2 misshapen scones - the lavender one almost inedible (like chewing a drawer lining).
I saw no elements of fine dining or carefully crafted offerings, which I would expect for the price.
So, I would say overall, pretty disappointing and a lack of effort - Betty's is resting on its laurels and tourist appeal. Add to that intrusive, over familiar service and it did feel more like Greggs in a nice location!

Really lovely. Service was great at the beginning but after we received the food no one checking to see if we needed anything. Had to wait a while to catch someone's attention for more tea and again when we wanted the bill. Really the only thing that stopped it been perfect.

On the plus side the tea rooms were amazing. It was like stepping back in time. Loved having the piano playing in the background. The food and teas were excellent quality. The rooms all dressed up for Christmas looked lovely.
We were a long while before people came to serve us and others were seated after us and served first. I have been to a lot of afternoon tea experiences and I think 6 sandwiches between myself and my husband is probably the least I have ever been served although they are happy to bring more on request.

Beautiful building both inside and out. The staff are fantastic, very attentive while at the same time discrete and friendly. Favourite food from the afternoon tea was the pork and apple pie, just a shame it wasn't available to buy in the shop.
