Rather disappointing. I'd wanted to eat at Benares for ages but it just didn't live up to expectations. The food lacked the finesse of flavour and presentation that I'd expect in a Michelin starred restaurant. I had the soft shell crab which was OK and the duck which was chewy just tasted of the mustard sauce. It came just cut into two pieces and dumped on the plate. No better than at an ordinary decent Indian. Also VERY expensive and not worth the price. Nearly £200 for two with only one bottle of wine and no pre-dinner drinks. The waiting staff were attentive but seemed to be upselling very hard trying to fill our wine and watre glasses up so fast so we would buy more.

The restaurant was very noisy which made it hard to hear my companion seated opposite.

I much preferred the Cinnamon Club for food, presentation and ambience.

Very disappointed at the table we were given, right at the end of a side room. If I had known I was to be put on the side I would not have bothered.

Booked Benares for a birthday dinner. Table was for 9pm and we were seated quickly. We opted for the £98/head tasting menu. We had some poppadoms and chutneys which were very nice and an amuse bouche which was a yoghurt and sweet potatoe dish, again very nice.
The courses then started appearing prior to any drinks arriving with an explanation of what we were eating. There was a scallop dish which was delicious and a chicken tikka pie to share, both very very good. We did feel quite rushed, with the next course arriving as soon as our cutlery hit the plate. The fish dish of salmon and a crab cake was excellent and my favourite. Just prior to a sorbet palate cleanser arriving one of the floor managers offer us our lamb main course before the sherbet sorbet, which we declined and thought it was a bit odd and perhaps indicated there was a problem in the kitchen. The sorbet arrived and was very nice. Once the lamb dish arrived we found out why and we were served a luke warm dish. As both our dishes were pretty cold I sent them back (something I've only ever done once before which feels very awkward). The floor manager took them back and brought fresh plates around 10 minutes later. The lamb was very nice but we had no apology at the time and no check as to how we found the replacement dish. From then on the service was poor. We were left sat for long periods with no drink and ended finishing the meal 3hrs after being seated! To cap it off the cook book which was part of the booking deal was offered to my girlfriend as a birthday surprise! (Normally wouldn't have bothered me but was a final straw)
Overall the food was very good. I appreciate mistakes happen but at a Michelin starred restaurant it shouldn't and I would have expected an apology at the time.
No apology or explanation was offered until I complained when paying the bill. Only after complaining the floor manager offered to remove the service charge and the cost of our initial 2 cocktails.

    Food was really lovely
Cocktails were not that nice - Indian spice infused. I would stick to the normal cocktails as they are quite pricey if you don't like them!
Toilets were freezing cold. Clean but very cold!

Myself and a colleague chose the tasting menu with Prestige Flight. Food and wines were amazing, but service was somewhat wanting. For £500 for two, I'd expect far more attentive interaction from staff and also faster service of both food and wines.
    7/10
