Service was great, food and wine was good and atmosphere and decor was great too. Some of the food didn't taste entirely 'India' including the panna cotta for dessert (definitely go for the carrot halwa!), but overall worth trying and a great experience.

I booked Benares as a surprise lunch for my husband's birthday. We were very well looked after and the food was excellent. The staff also brought out a little extra happy birthday dessert with a candle and offered to sing (we declined!) We had a 3 course set menu which was great value. All in all, a great experience.

It was a very nice restaurant. Very nice starting cocktails. We felt the portions were too small on £35/head menu and did not think we had value for money. We filled up on the rice- 3 small meat balls was more like a starter. The wine list contained only expensive wine - not much apart from the house wine at a reasonable price we paid £54 for a very nice bottle of pinot noir. We decided to share a dessert and order the specially paired dessert wine which turned out to be Pedro Ximenez sherry which did not go with dessert at all - we complained and got a complementary drink with our coffee and an apology. Really not in keeping with a restaurant that has a star. We could have lived without the cookbook but it does have some interesting recipes we shall try at home. There are much better Indian restaurants around where you don't need to spend £100/head. We felt we were paying for the location rather than the food for example, the poppadums were not as good as at our local Indian in Southampton.

Great food; the lentil dhal side dish was silky smooth, the nan bread crispy and not too doughy and the spicing of the main dishes perfectly balanced so that no one flavour overpowered the others.
The Benares reservations team were excellent when contacted about changing the time of our booking. The waiting staff were attentive without being overbearing and special thanks to the waitress who looked after our table.
Overall, a wonderful experience and the complimentary cookery book is a great momento.

We ate from the set menu, with 4 choices each of starter and main. The mussels in keralan coconut sauce was the stand out dish as a starter, but the samosas and paneer croquettes weren't far behind. For mains the koftas were excellent and the range of flavours very special. The Haddock curry got two thumbs up from my (adult) kids. The rose panna cotta got lots of oohs and aahs and a refusal to share! I had the carrot halwa and cake with mandarin ice cream. It was a like a deconstructed carrot cake, and was fantastic. The petit fours were also lovely, best jellied fruit I've ever had. All washed down with two different viogniers. We polished off one from the Rhone by Yves Cuilleron, lovely peachy flavours and had a glass of the Californian Clay Station, sold by the glass, much more honeyed, but also lovely.
So the Food and wine was Michelin Star, but so was the service. Absolutely top draw, just the right balance of attentiveness and product knowledge whilst leaving you alone to chat on a family occasion. Topped off by a complimentary book signed by Atul Kuchar, part of the excellent Bookatable deal.
We had a great afternoon and set off to see Jersey Boys in fine form - thanks to all the chefs, bar staff and waiting staff who made us so welcome
