Awarded a Michelin star, Benares brings the excitement and vibrancy of Indian cuisine to a chic, elegant setting in Mayfair, central London. The Indian subcontinent is fully explored in the Benares menu. All lamb and chicken is Halal, and many complementing exotic ingredients are encompassed, ranging from spice rubbed Romney Marsh lamb cannon with white aubergine purée and artichoke Fritters, to hearty vegetarian options like pea and lentil cakes with warm cauliflower purée and asparagus stir-fry. A number of dining options are available at this Atul Kochhar restaurant, from the a la carte menu, to Benares sharing platters and pre-theatre set menus.

An extensive wine list is also available, with expert recommendations by a sommelier to accompany key dishes. We have been to Benares before so we know the restaurant and the location both of which are great. The service is very professional and you are made to feel at home. However, we found the food very safe and bordering on the bland side. The calamari was great but the aubergine dish was very disappointing and the dhal was good dahl but not special in any way. The food offering appears to have diminished from a Michelin star offering to simply an up-market Indian restaurant.

We had a wonderful mix of food.the service was excellent with the waiter explaining all of the dishes.
The coriander and ginger cocktail was unusual but very tasty.
This was our first visit to benares.we would definitely go back.

We booked for the Street Food menu in the bar. Drinks are expensive, £13 for a G&T & £6 for craft beer. There is no drinks menu so despite the high price it's hot and miss what you get. As it is London and Indian food I would expect a greater choice of Craft Ales or Lagers. Street Food is £30 for 5 Tapas. There is no choice so if you have a Vegetarian in the party they miss out on 2 courses. The Spinach course & chicken course were the best. I think Indian tapas is a great idea but there needs to be a greater choice of food and a proper drinks menu. Probably not a good way of assessing whether a full meal is worth the price.

Bar a bit cramped but understand that justifies the very reasoanble food cost. Probably return for restaurant. Spontaneous offer to replace meat with vegetarian appreciated.
