Situated within easy reach of London’s Theatreland, The Bear & Staff is a traditional pub boasting a friendly atmosphere, a choice of ales and a modern twist on the traditional British menu. Housed in a building dating back to 1873 what is now our dining room was once a small theatre favoured by Charlie Chaplin, who occasionally used it for rehearsal space.

With Nicholson’s pubs first established back in the 19th century, the company has become synonymous with warm hospitality, fine pub food and a speciality stock of ales. Traditional favourites on offer including line caught sustainable Cod and Chips cooked in our own Nicholson's Pale Ale batter and our signature Steak & Ale Pie are bolstered by a seasonally changing range of dishes on the Nicholson’s menu. Also enjoy old-school desserts and nourishing breakfasts.

At the Nicholson’s bar expect to find six ale's including our famous Nicholson's Pale Ale, two regular ales and three guest ales which change with the seasons. Our resident cask master will be happy to offer matched ale and food pairing suggestions. Originally a gin palace the Bear & Staff drinks list features an extensive range of gins along with easy drinking wines, artisan soft drinks and classic lagers from around the world.

Bear & Staff in – Leicester Square is a minute’s walk from Leicester Square Tube Station and a 5-minute walk from Covent Garden Tube Station, Shaftesbury Avenue and Chinatown.

room was nicely decorated, food was lovely, great value for money, service was good no rushing us to get out, nice and relaxed

Bar staff although very pleasant did not speak or understand English very well and so our food order was incorrect. dLong waits at the bar to order as it got busier and unfortunately dining room closed so we were restricted to a small table downstairs. Having said that, food presented nicely and of a good standard and the staff despite language difficulties were all very nice.

The service and surroundings were good and value reasonable for London west end pub dining. Even the toilets were well above the usual standard so all in all a nice place. A good concise selection on the menu. Our only gripe would be that the ribeye steak order was dubiously a ribeye, more like a sirloin and came with few chips and the tomato and mushroom were very simply cooked. Though the other meals were of much better standard and appearance. Disappointing by the fact that looking out the window our view was of the steak house across the road.

Lovely venue with a good buzz and excellent service. Perfect location for pre or post theatre. For most of the time there was only one young man on both bar and table duty - Simon - but he was brilliant. The restaurant was busy but we didn't have to wait very long at at all to be served and he remained calm and cheetful. The four of us chose different main courses and they were all delicious and very good value.

The service was very good and the food was traditional British. My cousins who joined me for lunch had a very pleasant pub experience dusting their first visit to London.
